You've often heard that to do well you must help others do well. I've just had an interesting experience on the concept of how service to others not only helps them...but also the bottom line in a business.

Over this pre holiday season I decided to help out at a national retail chain store since the manger, a friend of a friend, had staffing difficulties. So off to the rescue comes my friend and I. We are both very service oriented individuals and immediately the results of this approach was evident.

First shift..I am only personally familiar with one of the many products this store sells..and I was thrust into helping the clientele. I was not prepared at all the way I normally would be...but off I went with my cheerfulness and the attitude that I would help in any way I could, seeking out answers to questions and making light of the fact that this was my first 5 minutes on the job.

The results...day 1...retail sales up by $1000 over the target shortly after I started. Day 2 ...I already had the reputation of being great with people with the staff, had frequent sincere gratitude for my help, one customer thought I was the manager..another thought I received commissions because of my attentiveness...I don't BTW.

What I did notice that the difference between my behavior and the other staff was that I made sure the people I came in contact with were treated cheerfully, I instructed on all the great deals of the day..and then listened to their needs and fulfilled them as best as possible. Results...many people took all the deals and I helped some people fulfill their choices. One lady I found very interesting. My first assessment was that she would not be interested, but after I engaged her and helped her, she took all the deals and was very grateful for my personal attention.

Wow..what a lesson in service to others and how that brings magic.

This concept is transferable to any business including the home business industry. Be cheerful in your dealings with your clients. Inform them of what you have that might be of interest to them, then attended to their personal needs.

Great job. People are more concerned about adding another member to their team and a few dollars to their commission than they are about their customer's satisfaction with their products, service, and leadership.

I can relate to your blog post Renita... I drive truck over the road and all that I hear from other drivers is how badly they are treated by the shippers and receivers. I don't experience this because I am always friendly and polite and with very few exceptions, I am treated well in return.
