I just finished a webinar where Stephen M R Covey presented some key points in this new book "Smart Trust" Here is an overview of this webinar.
There is currently a phenomena of low trust in today's society. Warren Buffet noticed that like air when present no one notices, when absent, everybody notices. This is what is happening today with trust.
There are 3 kinds of trust: 1. Blind trust..when you blindly trust everybody and everything 2. Distrust ...when you are suspicious and don't trust at all 3. Smart trust..a third alternative to the above that is trust balanced by analysis.
You can also see that #1 and #2 are extremes and are to be avoided.
Smart Trust is characterized by trusting when it is backed by the analysis of these 3 points: 1. Situation 2. Risk 3. Credibility of the people involved
Trust is from the heart where as analysis comes from the head, so Smart Trust embodies the best of these, promoting good and considered judgement.
It is important to learn when to and when not to trust The desire to trust also has a tendency to open people up to possibilities, that is why trusting is so important to us. Trust is also reciprocol. People respond to trust or distrust, they can sense it in others. Trust in business can create loyal and referring customers and is rewarded by an increase in business success.
It is interesting to note that there is inherent risk in both trusting and not trusting, but the preferred outcome is for a trusting model, a Smart Trusting model.
There are the 5 Actions that are Common in all Smart Trust People:
1. Choose to Believe in Trust: that most people can be trusted, trust pays off, building trust is a better way, start with a belief in trust.
2. Start with Themselves: put up mirror, ask..how can I be trustworthy, credible, start with character and competence: character involves motive and agenda, where as competence has to do with capabilities skills knowledge:are you revelent and current, and results ie. performance, people will project upon your future performance from your past and present results, transparency helps engender trust. also ask: do I trust myself, do I present a trusting person to others
3. Declare Your Intent: be transparent, open authenticity, builds trust, intend to serve, win/win, declare Why and the What and assume the positive intent in others unless otherwise indicated
4. Do What You Say You are going to Do: make a promise then keep it, builds trust
5. Lead Out in Extending Trust to Others: people respond better when you trust them, most people are basically good and can be trusted, but it is naive to think all people can be trusted.
There is a great need in today society for trust, not less. It has been considered today's greatest form of currency. As such Smart Trust plays a pivotal role in your everyday life.
Use Smart Trust in your business, in leadership roles and in deciding which business to be in.
The book Smart Trust by Stephen M R Covey goes into much more detail, it is highly recommended
To your utmost success and to employing Smart Trust in your life everyday.
