The Distractions of Internet Marketing About a month ago I passed a milestone! It was official, I had dropped off my keys to my Corporate office and I was now officially starting a new adventure, with a new title, Internet Marketer. Being self-employed and an entrepreneur was not new territory, though I had spent the last 11 years working for a software developer. This is the first in a series of articles about making the transition from full-time employed to being having a life style that you dream of, as you sit in your office or cubicle. I loved the job I had, I travelled all around the United States working with great people. Now my life had changed, my schedule was no longer dictated by the CEO and filled with meetings, conference calls, which left little discretionary time to create and ponder ideas of how to make life better. By the way, my change also removed the 1-2 hours commute everyday each way. Oh, the freedom of each day as I looked ahead - and all that extra time I gained from not having to sit traffic all those hours - so much of it unproductive. I would have the freedom to do what I want, when I want, if I want - well if you’re married, you'll need to dial that back a bit. So the first thing I scheduled was a Seminar on Internet Marketing. Three full days of learning about Internet Marketing - the result was I left inspired at what I learned, yet overwhelmed. The big dose of reality and the conclusion -- I had a lot more to learn. I left the structured environment of days and weeks being defined by someone else and the projects assigned to me. Now I entered a world of distractions and “shinny new objects” as Dan Kennedy often mentions in his newsletters. Whether you have Attention Deficit Disorder or not, the world of Internet Marketing is filled with the next “New App,” “Information Products” and “Training” that solves all your marketing problems. So days begin to fill with checking emails for the next great offer or opportunity that you simply cannot miss. If you are an “Information Gatherer” or should I use the term “Info Junkie” then you know what I am writing about. Whether you are a full-time marketer of just getting started, you know and have experienced the onslaught of “Shiny Objects” that grab your attention each day - emails and text messages. How do you manage to stay focused on the revenue producing activities? what is the answer for the dilemma of all the "Time Waister's"? One common trait of successful people is that they are focused and take action.
