Last night on the program "Finding you Roots" I was able to see the first use of DNA testing to determine a next generation connection in Genealogy. It was a major break through for me in regards to understanding the use of this method in Genealogy research.
The subject was LL Cool J who on his mothers side of the family had always grown up with a certain understanding of who his grandparents were via his mother. When they went to look for his mothers birth certificate it was not your normal birth certificate. This set off a red flag to the genealogist that something was not the way it should be. It did not list the parents which was a big red flag.
They then decided to test his mothers DNA against the DNA of his supposed Grandparents. It was determined that their was no DNA connection. This was a shock to all involved. The Grandparents had since passed.
Upon reevaluation of the birth certificate they went into the the birth index and were able to find his mothers birth certificate under another name. Through DNA testing they were able to prove this as well as who his father was. The testing proved that the Grandparents had actually adopted LL's mother. This did not change their feelings about them, but opened up a whole new family line for them. This is known as his birth family.
The real stunner was when they pulled out a picture of the birth Grandfather. Looked like LL. As they talked about the newly discovered family line their physical features and personal traits were very similar to LL. It ends up that his Grandfather and Great Grandfather were both heavily involved in Boxing. LL has been fascinated by boxing from an early age, but had no idea why. Amazing how much we do today is as a result of our DNA.
