Every time you interact with another person you are either positively building on a relationship or tearing it down.
However, if you practice your dealings with others will go smoothly.
It's always a first impression

You already know the importance of first impressions.
But have you considered that every time you interact with a person, you have the same opportunity to create that impression be it for good or bad.
Keep treating them with respect and you will be creating positive first impressions over and over again.
Respect is everything

Before there can be a meaningful positive relationship there has to be mutual respect.
Without respect, whatever relationship you develop has a foundation of sand and can topple easily.

Just listening isn't enough.
When it's your turn to talk remember that the other person is consciously or subconsciously watching your body language as well.

Use the calendar on your Outlook and enter birthdays and work anniversaries and make a point to convey congratulations, preferably in person but by phone or email if you can't.
Live by your set of values which means be the person at work that you are at home.
Living by one set of values makes it far easier to communicate with others.
Help yourself by helping others

This is really the key to building solid relationships.
Focus on helping others succeed.
Go out of your way to help a client succeed even if it means sending part of the business elsewhere.

Stay consistent, stay honest and offer respect and expect it in return and your well on your way to building business relationships that will last into the future.

Great advice...respect is everything...key is being able to bridge the internet space and help "virtual" strangers. I have found a friendly voice on a phone works better than an email any time when a friendly handshake can't be shared.

Great blog, well worth reading! Respect is vital in any relationship and without question, helping others will always return more in the long-term.
