Post - Critical Illness Health Insurance Should I Have It?

Critical illnesses can take a significant financial toll on a household. Medical bills make up just one part of the equation; lost wages, living expenses, domestic services, and other unexpected expenses can amplify the stress and hardship of a significant health event. Critical health insurance provides a tax-free, lump sum cash benefit in the event of a critical illness.

The critical illness insurance benefit can be used to pay for any expense associated with a qualifying illness. Enrollees have the flexibility to use the cash to cover their out-of-pocket health costs, as well as housing payments, grocery and household expenses, domestic services, and other expenses that may arise during that time. It can also cover necessary alterations that a policyholder may have to make to their home or vehicle.

While qualifying illnesses may differ based on policy and health insurance provider, this coverage provides a cash benefit for major medical events like major organ or heart transplants, cancer, heart attack, paralysis, coma, and more.

Those who wish to purchase critical illness insurance may have the option of doing so through their employer. This type of coverage is offered on a voluntary basis and is not subsidized by the employer, meaning that the employee will pay the full amount. In some cases, it may be offered as a rider to an existing health insurance policy.

This type of coverage is particularly beneficial for policyholders who are single or are the primary breadwinners in their household. However, even two-income households benefit from critical illness insurance, also called critical care insurance or critical illness coverage. Major illnesses often come with unexpected costs at a time when policyholders are least able to handle them, and this coverage can prevent the stress of financial hardship.

Critical illness insurance is available from individual insurance professionals. There are two different types available: simplified issue individual protection and a fully written individual plan.

Simplified issue individual protection is generally available in modest amounts up to $5,000. It is the more affordable and more easily attained option. The insurer typically asks a few general questions regarding overall health and lifestyle to determine whether an applicant qualifies.

A fully underwritten individual plan requires a more extensive vetting process. The insurer will inquire further regarding medical history and current health status. These plans offer significantly higher benefits up to $500,000 and come with a higher monthly cost.

The cost of critical illness insurance will depend largely on personal factors and medical history. Those who are researching critical illness coverage should discuss their needs and financial concerns with an experienced health insurance agent.

For many households, the costs associated with health care are at an all-time high, and health insurance costs are expected to see dramatic increases in the next three years. Critical illness insurance ensures that in the event of a major health event, a policyholder will have the ability to pay for medical expenses and maintain their standard of living.
