A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams.
Believe it or not just going to Walmart gives me peace, joy and it also clears out the frustrations of being stuck at home in a wheelchair. Most of us has seen pictures of Walmart people on the Internet.
Fortunately, I am blessed with a wonderful wife that does her best to keep my life as normal as possible. So these outing to Walmart, the mall, flea market and other retail businesses are a major psychological benefit for me, to just get out and do and see something different.
Unfortunately, friendly visits just does not happen from other people. This is something that I just do not understand, why people do not visit and drop in and ask, “What do yuou need? How can I help”, that includes church people, perhaps that is another blog. Or am I missing a point, in expecting something that will never happen.
However, last evening while leaving Walmart as we were going through Walmart’s parking lot. A middle aged man and woman passed us just as we approached our handicapped minivan.
As with most everyone, as a people watcher, I made eye contact with the couple walking toward us and I said hello. Both the man woman also made eye contact and said hello. This does not happen as often as one might think these days.
Then suddenly the man stopped and asked us if we needed assistance in getting into my handicapped van. To shorten the story, the woman’s brother is in a wherelchair but he is able to drive. The gentleman, helped put our groceries into our van. Then we showed the couple how easily it was for a person in a wheelchair to unfold the ramp. Our van has no electronics or hydraulics.
After exchanging an email address and a few more comments about the van, then we proceeded to go our separate ways. Later on last evening I sent the lady an email, thanking them for their helpfullness and included a handicapped van website for her brother. Hopefully, she will respond with another email or call.
But isn’t this the way we interact with people? Some day, sometime, some where we just seem to meet a new person. And is this not also, how we conduct our business by meeting one person at a time, when we last expect it, from someone, sometime, somewhere, from perhaps an Angel?

Store parking lots were the most dangerous place to be. The inattention of others often had me backing up as fast as possible to avoid being hit. If you can't change people change you. |

I quess too many people are married to their cell phones and only care for long-distance people while forgetting their neighbours! As far as helping out / offering help to handicapped people: I personally feel some kind of constraint offering it unasked for. Maybe the handicapped person understands my offer as considering him/her as a dependent person? |
