The Internet. It has truly changed my life. Back in the mid 1990's before I fell down in the bathroom and broke my neck in June 1994, I never touched or owned a computer that had Internet connections. I was born with Cerebral Palsy, it effects the speech, muscles, balance, coordination etc. I never walked before I had my first pair of leg braces and crutches at the age of five. Crawling or being carried was my way of moving around.
The braces were clamped into special shoes with a wide leather cuff on my calf, thigh and waist line, on both legs, reinforced with steel bands and rods, screws and rivets. Big, heavy, uncomfortable, especially in the summer time, when my legs would sweat under the leather cuffs. Then the sore, bloody blisters would quickly develop where my skin would rub on my brace cuffs. At least I was not crawling on my hand and knees to get around. Generally, on the weekends when I was not in school, I did not wear my braces to give my blisters on my legs to heal, from one to six blisters at a time.'
Years later after three surgeries on my ankles knees and thighs (groin area) I did not wear my braces. But I still needed crutches to "walk" with because Cerebral Palsy (brain damage at birth).
Being born with C. P. was a secondary normal thing for me. Walking and every muscle movement was different and talking was also different. But it was me, my life living in the main stream society the best I could. And that was a wonderful thing my parents did for me, get me in every normal situation as possible with life.
That is when my mom encouraged me with things like, "try and try again...can't never did anything".
But the point I was trying to make in the beginning...the Internet...communicating with the world, learning at your fingertips, or in my situation, pointer stick, typing one key stroke at a time.
The Internet...has changed my life tremendously, a powerful tool to keep my mind busy and I have met thousands of wonderful people on various Internet communication programs, including IBO, along with Iwowwe video world wide communications.
