Major League Baseball Player said, he is not, “Eating Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches Anymore”.
For over a decade beginning in the 1970’s my professional dream was to be an Administrator in Major League Baseball. Being born with Cerebral Palsy and growing up wearing leg braces and crutches there was no possible way I could play baseball.
While in high school and college I was a statistician on the baseball teams. Other than a phone call or letter from my high school guidance counselor, there as no advice or help from anyone, with the exception of Coach Marks.
Coach Marks was the Baseball Coach at Glen Oaks Community College. Again as a statistician for the baseball team, I traveled all over Michigan, Indiana and Ohio with the baseball team.
Coach Marks was also a scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates Major League Baseball team. Through Coach Marks, to make a long story short, I became friends with Joe Brown, Harding Peterson and Joe O’Toole, at that time in the ’70 & ‘80’s Vice Presidents & General Managers. Every summer at least once a year, I would fly to Pittsburgh all by myself and stay the week and visit with these men to “get my foot in he door” for a front office career, in ticket sales, public relations, promotions, anything to get started.
These gentlemen treated me very nicely and shown genuine interest in me. They scheduled meetings with me, introduced me to other executives. Free box seat tickets to every baseball game. Took me to dinner in restricted areas within the stadium. And offered great advice while I was in college. Everything but offer me a job, but at that time I was still in college.
All the other baseball teams just sent me form letters, if they even replied at all. My hundred or so letters, from minor and major league baseball teams I still have, many are form letters that say, “Thanks…but sorry’. There are two letters here from one team dated a year apart. With the exception of the date and maybe three words, it was the exact same letter as the year before.
So I have no real sympathy because I believe they have no perception of the real world, over pain, and spoiled is my view for most professional athletes, but I do admire and respect their ability, and setting in my wheelchair, I still dream and wish, “I wish I could play or be a part of the team”. And I love peanut butter sandwiches too.
What does this little story have to do with you and I now? Just about everything. All of us have dreams and desires. All of us might need to change things to get better results in our lives and businesses.
