Watch out for Domain Name Scams in the US Regular Mail.

In 2003, the FTC went to court against Domain Registry of America (DROA).

DROA is a company known for their use of direct US mail to domain name owners. DROA's mailings tried to convey the impression that the domain name's registration was expiring and that filling out the form and paying would renew the domain registration. In fact though, users were transferring their domains from their old registrar to DROA, and were doing so at uncompetitive prices. Ironically, the DROA is based in Canada. It also operates in Europe as the Domain Registry of Europe.
The new letters aren't as misleading as they used to be, but they're still doing it and you need to informed. I have registered quite a few domains (more than a few dozen but less than a few thousand) and receive letters from DROA about domains of mine all the time. The title of the letter is "Domain Name Expiration Notice". The opening paragraph clearly identifies it as an offer to switch to the DROA. It says that the domain will expire "in the next few months" (in fact, it's over several months from the date of the letter) and says "Reply Requested By: xx,xx,20xx".
Why take action?
The letter implies that I will not be eligible for their "best savings" if I don't act now.
What are their prices? 1 year for $30, 2 years for $50, or 5 years for $95. These were OK prices back around 1990's, but even Network Solutions will give you a much better deal these days. In other words, it's not a good deal. Most registrars charge between $6 and $15 per year and offer various products as well.
If you really read their letter carefully, you wouldn't fall for it. The company clearly has been required to include the truth in their mailings, even if it is surrounded by a misleading sense of urgency. However, if you weren't paying attention, or you didn't know what you were reading, you might get switched at higher rates. So watch out.
