In my twenty years in the indoor environmental remediation, assessment, and consultation industry, I have worked for people who had a lot of potential - that was never realized. One person, in particular, was running a small business in a small city, performing work equaling nearly $4 million dollars annually; however, there were several things being neglected and clients were taking notice. Though out the city people would say to me, "You don't work for . . . Do you?" (I would just smile and take note. I did not want to work somewhere with that kind of reputation, and was making plans on moving.)
Now, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that this kind of public view deteriorates the successes of the past, leaving the future questionable: Will that $4 million per year be there next year? Will the community continue to call upon the company's services or will the business just erode? (Just before I left this company a major insurance company was pulling out their $1.5 million per year contract with this company. Ouch!)
The problem, at this company, was the owner and management took their success for granted, towering themselves over others as if elite to the world around them. They believed that their service was so important that the community could not live without them, so it didn't matter what the community thought about their attitudes - the community would mind themselves!
I disagree; in fact, I founded my business, SOLUTIONS Indoor Environmental Consulting, on four main principles that I sensed were essential for successful service and successful business growth. One of these principles directly addresses what we are talking about in this blog: Having a Heart to Serve Others!
A genuine heart to serve others is essential for so many reasons. To keep it in context with this blog I want to just address the difference between the two attitudes: (1) sincere care for others and (2) lackadaisically going about providing a service to others.
People are not stupid. You may be in a specialized field, but they get it. They know when you care about them and when you don't. And, when you don't, they take note. Likewise, when your heart is truly in the service that you are providing others, others notice, begin to trust and defend your service, begin to rely on your service, and begin to take your service for granted (which is a huge responsibility for anyone who has reached this level of trust).
My colleagues and I do not take this attitude lightly, here at SOLUTIONS Indoor Environmental Consulting. We believe in what we do and in those we serve, and do it for those we serve as much as we are here to "make a living". This principle is a foundation of our existence as people and as a company, so when we hear things, from our clients, like: "I cannot say enough good things about Jason. He took the time to explain our options and made our situation become manageable. After Jason's help I was confident in our path forward to getting our problem fixed." We understand that WE ARE THE ONES WHO HAVE BEEN BLESSED.
So, my advice to anyone and everyone, who is reading this blog, is to find your heart in your work - where ever and what ever you are - and express that heart openly, honestly and without boundaries. Your blessings will be greater than any amount of money you might receive.
May God bless you all.
