What arctic swimming taught me about getting things done...

I met an impressive fellow recently who is one of those, er, let's say eccentric people who swims in the sea everyday.

And given that we live in distinctly-not-tropical Scotland, I think you'll agree this is an impressive feat.

When I asked him the obvious question (why?!) he told me he was 'addicted' to it.

"If I don't do it before work I feel the way most people feel if they haven't drunk coffee. I feel grumpy and flat and a bit tired," he explained.

At the time I was wrestling with the prospect of getting a massive project off the ground. The amount of work I needed to do looked so huge and daunting that I was a little intimidated by the size of it.

Thinking about the power of habit, I knew the only way I could get this done.

I had to make working on this massive project for an hour a day an unshakable part of my morning routine. Something as normal as having breakfast. (Or for my new friend - a wee icy dip.)

And so over to my good friend hypnosis to cement this new pattern in my mind quickly.

And now...well the project is still pretty enormous. But not only do I know I'm getting somewhere, but I know that if I do it daily, it'll be finished by the end of the year.

Sometime it just takes someone who's doing something much harder to show you how gutless you're really being, doesn't it? ;-)
