NewsFlash! Enlightenment Won't Work! Waking Up Is Not Enough!!!

Rather self-evidently, we here at iAwake have been concerned with waking up. It is contained in our name and has also been a great part of why we have created and designed tools to help more of us wake up much more quickly and democratically than was possible before the advent of these transformational tools.

I am currently writing a book that talks about this process.

So, one of the things we have learned over the last 50 or 60 years is that simply waking up spiritually isn’t enough.

The story, or maybe the myth, used to be that when you became “enlightened,” everything got fixed. Now you’d be wise, compassionate, all-knowing, and could maybe even work miracles.

These are mythic stories that were probably useful at the time they were created—in the same way our childhood magical stories are fun and appropriate at the time such as Santa and his elves, the Easter bunny, etc.

However, in the last few decades we have learned so much, a lot of it through trial and error, as we watched our spiritual teachers and enlightened masters crash and burn, creating all kinds of chaos as they acted out in completely unwise and very hurtful ways.

What was going on here?

One of the explanatory maps we use in Integral circles these days - and I think a very helpful one - is that we need to wake up, grow up, clean up, and show up.

Let me spell this out in shorthand:

Waking up means to wake up in a spiritual sense. To realize who and what you are at the deepest level. Your original face before your parents were born. Your original face before the universe was born. Your original face before time itself was born.

Growing up is growing to the highest level of moral and ethical development we are capable of.

Shorthandfor this process is going from egocentric to ethnocentric to worldcentric to kosmocentric.

The reason growing up is essential in the mix is because if you do wake up spiritually, you will interpret that experience through the lens of whatever developmental level you find yourself.

So, if you are at an egocentric level, you will interpret it egocentrically. Obviously, this can create a great deal of chaos and problems, as with the aforementioned spiritual teachers. To be able to hold the process of spiritual awakening at its most effective and wisest stages of personal development, one needs to grow up as well as wake up.

Cleaning up means we have to do the deep interior work of cleaning up our unconscious shadows, split-off personalities, PTSD, woundings, and negative stories and assumptions about ourselves and the nature of reality because if we don’t, even though we wake up and do an amazing amount of growing up, we will still have unconscious and shadow aspects that will haunt us, cause us suffering, and be projected on others and the world in unhealthy and hurtful ways.

Showing up - Lastly, we have to put this whole package together: the waking up, growing up, and cleaning up, and find our unique and beautiful callings and gifts and give them back to the world—for all sentient beings, for the generations that came before us, for the generations that are here now, and for the generations to come.

Is this daunting and challenging?

Doesit require heroic practice and work?

Well, yes, it does. But it’s really the only game in town that’s worth playing. So, let’s keep loving, practicing, and working together.

Listen to Deep Delta Now:

"I found Deep Delta to be so comforting and calming after a very sad shock. I felt myself letting go of the overstimulation of thinking about the event to an acceptance within the first day of listening. It was very clear to me that my mind had changed from listening to Deep Delta repeatedly. I took the CD to work to enhance the experience for my Massage Therapy clients. Almost all enjoyed the effect of the music. I'm so glad I found you as a resource and will purchase more in the future."
