Getting into Ketosis And Why It Is Good For You!

When I thought about ketosis what came to my mind was ketoacidosis and uncontrolled diabetes. I had Type 2 diabetes for over 20 years (I am non diabetic now) and had ketoacidosis once during that time. Seeing ketones in the urine was a scarey thing back then. I was already in the hospital for gall bladder surgery but they could not do anything for 5 full days since I was in ketoacidosis and pancreatitis because of the gall bladder.  They had me on an IV all that time. But that is not what this article about.  But when you hear ketoacidosis I am sure that is what you think too.

In the last 6 months I have learned some new facts about ketones in your urine. I have been in Ketosis since July 22nd. Are you asking now why in the world would you want to be in ketosis?

What is ketones and ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic process that occurs when the body does not have enough glucose for energy. Stored fats are broken down for energy, resulting in a build-up of acids called ketones within the body. Some people encourage ketosis by following a diet called the ketogenic or low-carb diet. This is the diet I have decided to do as I feel much more healthy and have a lot more energy because my body is running on a cleaner fuel than sugar. Yes, The medical professional did not tell us the truth. They will not admit that running on fat or ketones is better for you. 

Why do we make ketones?

 *1 For starters, it’s a vital evolutionary advantage.  Our brain can only function with glucose and ketones.  Since we can’t store more than about 24 hours worth of glucose, we would all die of hypoglycemia if ever forced to fast for more than 24 hours.  Fortunately, our liver can take fat and select amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) and turn them into ketones, first and foremost to feed our brains.  Hence, our body’s ability to produce ketones is required for basic survival.

What is Keto Adaption?
