If you have less than a years experience in affiliate marketing most likely you have paid out way more than you have brought in. There are several reasons for this but lets just focus on those beyond your control.
What you may not know is so called guru's or team leaders build a list, market to the list, fill the company slots, make the money, and go to the next big launch they knew about before you did. Now you see an appealing offer to join only to find you are trying to build all by your lonesome. Few are joining you while most quit when you don't provide spillover. Sooner than later the admin is no longer manning the site because they have opened a new one.
Keep in mind this is not the case with all affiliate companies but they far out way the legitimate ones. Also think about this, are you joining for the product or service or just to earn fast money? There are several goodies you can acquire even in bad companies such as e-books and training webinars.
If you have a primary MLM company with a good business model, training and support, as well as established leaders, then focus on this and avoid the lure of affiliates unless using to market your primary. Primaries are for long term growth and wealth building. They allow you the best opportunities to develop your mindset and skill sets. When people call this industry a scam it usually goes back to a bad experience in affiliate marketing.
