We all have days where we think “is it all worth it? Why not quit and do something else”. It’s just human nature to occasionally doubt ourselves and wonder if what we are doing is going tolead to where we want to be.
It’s at those times we turn to others to seek the inspiration and motivation to continue. To realise that what we are doing is what we need to be doing to break free and reclaim what we want from life.
So who is the source of your inspiration in those times?
Mine is a person that may not seem to have any type of relationship to building a business or striving to achieve a dream. But this person is so powerful that they inspire me more than any “guru” or leader in our industry (and trust me, those people empower and motivate me to a great extent).
So who is this person?
When I was teenager I began playing golf. Back in the mid 70’s young teenagers were not a significant group in the golfing fraternity – hasn’t that changed over the years. But I digress.
To put it simply, golf was one of those games that came naturally to me. I went from a high handicap to a single figure handicap in the space of a couple of years – did not practice much, basically just got out there and “whacked the sucker” around the course.
One of my regular playing partners was man about 25 years my senior. This person was riddled with Rheumatoid Arthritis throughout his entire body and had been since his mid 20’s (in fact so severe was this disease that he was case studies in a number of medical papers). It was hard for me to comprehend the level of pain and adjustment this man endured to play golf (his hands were deformed and yet he found a way to hold that golf club). He used no electric buggy to get around the course, walking and pulling the “manual one” around.
This man was not a great golfer, heck he was generally a high 20’s handicapper – but he persisted. Over the years he adapted swing, grip and knowledge until one day he broke through and his handicap went to 19. It stayed there but briefly – but he had achieved his goal – years after he started the quest to achieve it.
In his normal life, this man never once complained of his disease – in fact if he was ever asked how he was feeling he always responded “never felt better”. His positive attitude to life and its challenges was simply incredible. He never sought sympathy, never blamed anyone for his “lot in life” and faced every day with a smile.
He was not a wealthy man financially, but he was incredibly rich in attitude and approach to life – it was more important to him to help others (family, friends, etc) than to help himself.
Over the time that I knew this man he faced many personal situations that would have broken many. He endured the loss of a teenage so, a father dying in his arms and caring for his wife in later years as she suffered from severe dementia. He personally faced multiple medical conditions other than his Rheumatoid Arthritis such as heart attacks, a kidney transplant, adult diabetes and blood infections. Through all of this he never complained or lost his sense of “fairness” – he accepted it as another challenge to overcome.
This man is my inspiration – my motivation – to continue forward when things seem “tough”. He may not be part of my life anymore (he is playing the golf courses in another place now), but the impact he made on my life remains with me. How can I ever feel as though I cannot succeed when I have experienced how success can be achieved regardless of what happens in life.
THIS MAN IS MY FATHER.
So who is your inspiration when times get tough? Who is the person that will pull you through the “dark times” to emerge stronger and resolute as you focus on achieving the success you have decided to build?
PS: I am on a quest to achieve success. If you are committed to doing the same then I would welcome the opportunity to work with you. Feel free to contact me and we can share ideas on how to achieve the success we deserve.
