Who remembers the “Typing Pool”? Whether it be a small office with a single typist or a huge “hall” full of teams of typists. All pounding away on keys, preparing reports, letters etc for the business they supported.
Where are they now?
Consigned to the scrap heap of time and progress, along with other trades and “careers”.
When I was young, entering a trade or service was viewed as a pathway to success and the building blocks of a career in a chosen field. There was an expectation that these things would “always be there”. But as we all realise the time of certainty has long since disappeared as technology continues to “re-define” requirements in the traditional business system.
So what happened to all those typists as technology replaced the need for such services in the work-place (transferring their skills to everyone else as computers became the norm)? Sure, some of them were re-trained and moved into new areas, but for many (especially those who only knew this skill and had forged out a career) work came to a shuddering halt. Suddenly they were thrust onto the “rubbish heap of progress” – they became “The Expendables”.
The purpose of this blog is not to argue against the rate of change and the impact it is having on the “certainty” of career choices made years or decades before. No, this blog is merely highlighting that the “certainty” of the past can no longer be expected into the future.
What does this mean? That anyone working with in the “traditional” business world should plan on the unexpected. Should consider that their chosen career path could become “obsolete” during their working life.
The question then becomes – how to plan for the unexpected? The answer is not to depend on business or government to come to the rescue. The answer is to look at how you can take ownership of your life and develop a “fall back” strategy; an alternative income stream that you can control.
How do you do that? Step outside your comfort zone and pre-conceived ideas. Explore the benefits of running your own “on-line marketing” business (low cost, high potential). Why? Because it is only through your efforts in your own business that you can be certain of having a fall back plan if your “traditional” career becomes “expendable”.
Ownership is the key to the future. If you don’t own it (business, career, etc) then someone else does. And if someone else owns it then you leave yourself open to becoming an “expendable”.
Traditional thinking is fast becoming “old world”…it is time to embrace the “new world” and adjust your thinking to realise the success that we all seek. We have all embraced the changes and challenges we have experienced over the last few decades – now is the time to embrace new thinking on how to achieve success during our “working life”.
Don’t become “expendable” – become the “embracer” of the “new world”.

| | | | | The post is right on target. Back in the days when I was selling encyclopedias, I thought that that was going to be my life's work. Wrong. The internet got big and encyclopedias went the way of the dinosaur. Prepare for the future. Look ahead and see the big picture. |
