Older Worker – Does Experience Really Count?
Are you an Older Worker (I am)? If you are then you need to accept that business may not view you as a valued member of the team.
Older workers often consider themselves the “voice of reason” in the business world. With many years of experience behind them, older workers can draw on that knowledge to solve issues and develop comprehensive business concepts. In addition, older workers provide mentoring roles to younger, more inexperienced employees. But does this count for anything in the real world?
Based on recent research – the answer would seem to be a resounding NO.
Older Worker – Reality Hurts – You Are Not Loved
A recent study in Australia found that older workers were discriminated against in the workplace. According to the article the study found that:
“Older employees are being dumped, denied training and even verbally abused…”
and
“Discrimination was worst among middle managers earning the average Australian wage of $70,000 a year…”
and
“Cost and workplace culture were cited as reasons older workers were often overlooked in favour of young staff…”
I would suggest that the above is applicable globally and is not just an Australian thing.
Makes you feel good to be an older worker doesn’t it? NOT LIKELY.
Bottom line – experience loses out to costs in business. Why pay an older worker $70,000 when you can get a younger person to do it for $50,000? Who cares about the inevitable productivity loss and longer term impact – not business. Business exists for the short term bottom line that delivers “over the top” Executive packages.
Older Worker – How Can You Protect Yourself
There is only one way to protect yourself against being a statistic – take control of your life.
You can no longer expect to move gracefully into retirement from fulltime employment. Instead you need to prepare to be the “cannon fodder” for cost cutting measures and paving the way for younger workers.
Isn’t it time for you to consider alternative ways to shore up your income? Isn’t it time to consider owning your own business where you control the outcome?
That’s what I am doing. I have found a solution to the situation – one that does not cost much (but can deliver big), and is supported by a community of like minded individuals (young and old) who want to help you to succeed. You can check it out here. goo.gl/WqavH
If you are an older worker – it is time for you to explore different opportunities to make the change from work to retirement align with your schedule or expectations – not the schedule of business.
The article is not “great reading” but it is reality – so take charge today!!! Older workers unite.
PS: If you are a younger worker – remember…one day you will become an older worker. You can get a head start on us older workers (who are just facing reality) by taking control now. If you don’t want to become an “older worker statistic” in the future – take action today. goo.gl/C6yjK
