It's hard to believe how far we have come in such a short period of time.
When I was young, life was far simpler - my parents marvelled at the concept of television (a grainy black and white set, manual tuning, and at cost higher then than what we pay today - I think around $500 in 1960's) - while I marvelled at hand held calculators that could add and subtract.
In those days, one had to entertain themselves (no Nintendo's, PS3 or Wii). It was a time when most of us played sport in teams (for me - Australian Rules football in the winter, cricket and tennis in the summer) - and you rode your bike to get to and from where you had to be (no family taxi service in those days). Take-away food was a Chinese restaurant or fish and chips.
Do I still long for those days? At times yes (nostalgia is a function of the aging process - if you are young, just wait, your time will come). But in many ways the answer is no. What we can do today just demonstrates how creative and inventive we are - and that change is inevitable.
Much of the change has been driven by technology but this is merely the enabler to open up opportunities for society as a whole - especially in the field of online marketing.
While many look at online marketing negatively - let's consider the positives.
30 years ago, if you wanted to run your own business you generally had to get a loan, buy (or build) a shop, market your product/service and make a living. It was costly with no guarantee of success. Sure there were offline marketing opportunities (Avon, Amway etc) but even these were viewed with a degree of skepticism - and you had to run "home parties" or "business building" meetings to generate growth.
Today, you can run your own business from home, for less than a cup of coffee, and convert your free time into increasing your income stream. You are not geographically constrained, the world is your market place. You have the ability to become successful in your own right without the need to risk everything. You have the power to control your own destiny.
And here is the thing that separates your business from most offline businesses - the majority of people in the on-line community want you to succeed. They want to hear how you were able to break free of traditional thinking and regain control of your life and your time. In the same way as you want to hear the success of others.
So nostalgia is great - but the here and now is what we should grasp.
So unite with people from all around the world who are there to support you to succeed. Join communities of like-minded individuals and have your dreams reinforced as becoming a reality. Do not listen to those who cannot appreciate what you are capable of achieving.
The power is in your hands, the support of others freely given - remember the past fondly, embrace what you have today and look forward to what is yet to come.
