Some folks balk at changing electric companies because it is just not something they are used to doing. They change their cable company, their phone company, there cell phone company...but their electric company?? Others have done this before - in fact I have even had blog comments saying "energy deregulation doesn't work". What they mean by "work" is that they didn't save any money.
It's true that one has to choose wisely when changing ESCO's (Energy Service Companies). Some offer big bells and whistles for the initial sign up, but a quarter way through the contract the bills seem to get higher!
I have been a customer of Ambit Energy since July 2010. I have saved around $5 a month most months - not a ton, no, but it has never gone up! In fact in New York State Ambit Energy offers guaranteed savings and pledges that at the end of a year of service with them if your annual bill was higher than it would have been with the competitor, they will cut you a check for the difference. They have been in New York State since 2007 and have not had to cut one single check. In Texas customers save up to 30%! Ambit has some great commercials that they run in Texas about the savings. Bottom line is that Ambit offers the opportunity to earn free energy! That is way more than even 30% savings!! Right now my son and his family of 5 are staying with us, so with all the laundry our supply bill is up to about $60 from around $40. Last month our free electric check was $38. So, we paid $22. If my son had not been living here, we would have paid $4. What your check would be each month depends on the customers (friends & family) that you refer to the Ambit Energy service. If you know folks that pay their bill on time and probably use more energy than you do - refer THEM! Ambit takes the average of the 15 people's bills that you have referred and then that's what you get in a check the following month - every month!
Most people we know are like us - they don't use much electric, so we got $38. But you know what that means to me? It means taking my 9 grandchildren to McDonald's Play Place and getting them all a Happy Meal. Or taking them to the KidzClub - a fun local place for kids. It's $5 a kid to get in. That helps!
So what are you paying? Are you paying full price because that feels safe? Or do you not want to go for the free energy because you don't want to bother people and ask them to switch? LOOK - do THEM a favor too! They can at the least save too! And if they want to, they can also earn free energy! And by the way, you can earn free natural gas as well - not just electricity.
