Recently my husband and I have been going through a bit of a financial struggle. He is a boilermaker - which if you don't know, means that he builds, maintains and repairs power plants - and he has been out of work since May. He used to work out of town a lot but we decided that he should hold out for local work and stay home. After all, he spends all that time and effort to work and make money - but he never gets to live in his own house? Just didn't make much sense! Well anyway, we are used to having way more than what we need and so for him to be unemployed since May has been...different.
My husband complains because things are tighter than we are used to but I am able to tell him stories of a time when I was married to my first husband and we really had NOTHING! The electric was shut off, our home was repossessed, my children were young - it was a huge struggle! Much like what many American's are going through right now! I gained a lot of strength from God during that time and grew as a person - and I have never forgot that difficult time in my life.
We are growing our business right now, and while we can't retire quite yet, we are continuing to build it to a place that we can not only be back in our financial comfort zone, but also to a place where we can give back and help those that are in situations similar to ours or worse. As foster parents, even though we live in the country in a very remote area, we are often asked to take kids who have spent most of their life in a large city with challenges that I can only imagine. I have become friends with some of our foster children's friends and have kind of taken them in as extended family too. They don't and can't live with us, but I do whatever little bit I can to help them. One is currently on our cell phone plan so he has a way for a job to call him if he can find one. We purchase a few little items for them from time to time or take them out to lunch; whatever little bit we can do to make their life a little brighter.
I hope we can do more one day for all those kids out there that fall through the cracks and don't have anyone to help them out - and for their parents and for those communities. A hand up and a caring ear is sometimes all anyone needs to get on the track to a better life. The better life that our business is providing for us, will help us to help others.
