This weekend we had a birthday party for one of my granddaughter's and one of her little friend's came via her great grandmother. The woman is in her 80's and we got to talking and she mentioned how her now deceased husband had worked for 30 years at the same factory. A factory in fact, that no longer even exists in the area.
Working 30 years for the same company and then retiring from there with a good pension or other retirement benefit just doesn't happen any more. There are a handful of people who are generally civil servants like firemen and policemen and sometimes nurses and other medical staff may work at the same place for their entire career...but those who work for companies...it just doesn't happen anymore. As I mentioned - the company that this woman's husband worked at does not even exist anymore!
There is only security today in being self-sufficient. You must learn to bring in multiple streams of income in the industries of today...which can quickly change on you. In a couple of years or even several months - that may no longer be the industry that will bring you the most benefit. You need to stay on top of it - always learning and developing your skills.
I am fortunate to be young at heart and not much older in years than what I am today. Those that are set in their ways, thinking that things will continue as they did decades ago will likely need to rely on their children or other family members to get through their golden years.
