Bad Mood/That's Enough of That!

 


   I was supposed to have met with an old friend this week, but he called and canceled at the last minute, saying he was in a bad mood. I know that moods can overwhelm us at times, so I offered my support, encouraged him to take care of himself, and agreed to meet with him next week.

We've all had those days when we feel grumpy and out of sorts. That's what my mum called "waking up on the wrong side of the bed."My mum also taught me how to chase away those grumpy feelings so that I could start the day fresh.


    When I was younger and woke up grumpy, for whatever the reason, my mum would acknowledge my feelings, give me about five minutes to wallow, and then she'd say, "Right. That's enough of that. Time to move on to the solution." Being allowed to validate my feelings and spend a few moments to sit with my mood before suggesting it was time to focus on something more positive was extremely helpful. It was as if she was validating those difficult feelings, but then showing me how to create a better day.


    Another trick my mum used whenever I was in a bad mood involved sound and motion. She'd turn on the radio to some upbeat music and insist I dance with her for a few minutes, or if the weather were nice she'd insist that I go for a long run. Jeff, even though I didn't always feel like running or dancing, I was always pleasantly surprised at how much better I felt after getting some exercise or moving to some uplifting music. Now we know that exercise and movement help our bodies to release mood-enhancing endorphins, so my mum was on the right track.


    One of the more powerful ideas my mum shared was to do something good for someone else. When I'd find myself too wrapped up in my own feelings, she’d suggest I visit an elderly shut-in neighbor, help out in the community victory garden, or volunteer at a school event. And it didn’t stop there. She taught me that a smile, a compliment, or other small acts of kindness, like giving up my seat on the bus, were things that benefitted me as well as the receiver. I learned that making someone else feel better makes me feel better, and the habit of giving my time and helping others has become a staple one for me. I have to admit that I rarely find myself sidetracked by emotions or spending an entire day feeling grumpy.


    We all are susceptible to unpleasant feelings now and again, and many of them may be absolutely valid. However, if we're willing to take a few steps to focus our energy in more positive directions, they don't have to spoil our entire day. I hope these ideas will help to inspire you when you feeling a dark mood coming on, and help you to say to yourself "Right Than That's Enough of That!"
