Do I need a domain name? If you are planning to start an Internet based home business, it is highly recommended to have your own domain name.

A domain name (URL, Uniform Resource Locator) is a website address, "your brand", it is where people will visit to get more information about your products and services. It is your home on the web.

The theme of your website should be built around your domain name. This means that if you choose a domain name that contains the words "home business", then your site should be about "home business" related topics.

Your domain name needs to describe what your website is about. This way your visitors have a clue what your website is about. If you have the phrase "home business" in your domain name, the search engines are going to love it too.

Video - The importance of having keywords in your domain name

It has become really difficult to find a domain name that makes sense, new sites are coming online every day. The domain name you want to register, might not be available anymore. You need to come up with different variations of names that contain "home business".

There are also many different domain extensions available that you can choose from. From my experience, you should only choose a so called TLD domain extension (Top Level Domain).

This is an extension that ends with

These domain extensions rank a lot better in the search engines than other extensions. If a .com extension is available, it is highly recommended to choose that one. It is the most well-known extension and brings trust. People know that .com is a business.

To find the perfect domain name, you can use a free tool called Domain Samurai. It will identify available domain names for you and stop you from making critical mistakes. Choosing the wrong domain name will results in less traffic and low search engine rankings.

Once you have found the perfect domain name, the next thing you need to do is register it. You can often register your domain name right from the source, where you did the search.

If you cannot register it from the source directly, you can go to a domain registrar like and register it there. Registering a domain name for one year costs around $15. often has special offers available, you can get the first year registration for really cheap and then the price reverts back to the regular price for year 2 and 3. When you have registered your domain name, the next step is to create a website.

Your website will be the place where you share useful information about your topic. Before you can start writing content, you need a place to store your files. You need a web hosting account.

What is Web Hosting?
All your website files are stored in a web hosting account, a server. This allows people to visit your website from all over the world. There are web hosting companies like for instance where you can host all your files.

If you need web hosting for your home business site, all you need is shared hosting. This simply means that the same physical server hosts hundreds of websites.

It might be that your site loads a little bit slower but the monthly fee is also cheaper. You can expect to pay around $10 per month for hosting.

There are many web hosting companies available online, it can be difficult to choose which company to go for.

Here are a 3 important things you need to consider.

#1. What do you really need?
You need to identify what you really need. If you have just one website/blog, then all you need is shared hosting.

#2. Reliability
You must choose a reliable web hosting company. System failures, huge down time and other trouble means that you lose money. Your website is not up and running if the web server is down for maintenance.

#3. Your budget
If you are thinking of setting up your own website, you need to be prepared to pay for web hosting. As I mentioned, if you website is offline you will not make any money.

Personally, I have been with for over 10 years and can highly recommend them. Shared hosting with costs $7 per month.

Do I need a domain name and web hosting? If you are looking start an Internet based home business then you will need these things. There are also free options available.

With free options, you would not be in control. There would be advertising on your site and in many cases you would not own your content after publishing in on free platforms.

Another thing about free options you should know is that your website could be deleted in an instant because you broke some rules you didn´t even know existed.

Starting an Internet based home business takes money if you want to get results from it. The most important investments are a domain name and web hosting.
