Sports chiropractic encompasses the care of participants of all ages, from the young skeletally immature child to the elderly as well as the multiple levels of both the organized and recreational sports. Each has specific vulnerabilities.?Related image?

The increasing awareness of the value of regular exercise has produced millions of individuals participating in numerous athletic pastimes. Because many of these recreational athletes eventually sustained injuries, it is to be expected that the practice of sports medicine will assume an increasingly important role. Sports medicine and sports chiropractic are multi-specialty disciplines that have a variety of support echelons at the recreational as well as the collegiate and professional levels. I am working with two major universities as the team chiropractor. One is the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and the other is Northwestern University. I see a multitude of athletes from football, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, track and field, soccer, etc. The care that is delivered is through an encompassing effect in a multidisciplinary approach from the athletic trainers on staff to the orthopedists to the psychologists, dentists, general physicians, and chiropractic physicians. We have an encompassing approach in order to better serve the athletes' needs. I have had the opportunity over the course of the past two years in working as the team chiropractor for both universities to come across many gifted athletes. In this past year NFL including: 9 patients from Northwestern University who I have beed working with were drafted into the NFL from two linebackers, a wide receiver, a quarterback; three offensive linemen, a running back, and a defensive tackle. The experiences that I had with these athletes has allowed me to see how chiropractic care plays an integral part in biomechanics and maximizing the athletes' performance in a day to day basis as well as prevention in athletic injury. The combination of the utilization of services has taught not only myself, but also other healthcare professionals of the integration, of chiropractic care in sports and the maximum improvement achieved with the athletes. In evaluation and perimeters that encompass the sports medicine team at the universities, we look at the following in terms of evaluating athletes.

  1. The knowledge of the mechanism of the injury helps us in the diagnosis and development of, preventative strategies, such as a treatment protocol encompassing medication, chiropractic care, and rehabilitation.
  2. Early consultation helps minimize the development of chiropractic and pathological changes in the tissues. This will be best exemplified in a surgery where scar tissue develops in order to aid the recovery and tissue. This early rehabilitation shows a marked improvement in terms of return to play and ability to function and perform the way they could before the injury.
  3. Accurate assessment and diagnosis of the condition allows us to utilize and encompass the variety of therapeutic decisions that are needed to achieve the best balance and maximum improvement of the athlete.
  4. Utilizing an objective and functional assessment technique takes into account the specific sport. In this example utilizing either football, basketball, baseball and softball; at the collegiate level as well as at the high school and grade school levels; we have to take an assessment according to the specific sport and the activities that they will be performing relating proper treatment and care in order to achieve the maximum balance and improvement for the patient.
  5. Developing an injury prevention program minimizes the risk of participation. This is exemplified through the triage of care that we utilize at the collegiate level. The services offered are from a general physician or orthopedist, and myself as the team chiropractor. We help develop an injury prevention program in order to, keep injuries at a minimum and help prevent injuries from occurring. These factors are all considered when developing perimeters in a sports medicine level when training athletes. In working with the high school and collegiate level athletes, I have seen a great benefit of sports chiropractic in the sports medicine realm. I have seen the satisfaction from not only a physician's standpoint, but also from the athlete's standpoint.

Whether you are competing in marathons on weekends, or a recreational athlete playing softball, golf, or tennis, prevention is the best policy. Regular Chiropractic treatment will help maximize the best athletic performance in whatever sport you partake.
