Giving anything away sounds counterproductive to the struggling entrepreneur who is just trying to stay afloat.  However, this business model has been tried and proven to be very successful.  This process may initially seem like a sacrifice of revenue but is actually a lucrative tradeoff.  Everybody loves getting things for free.  Surprisingly, giving stuff away seems a lost leader as a way of losing money but when handled correctly, giveaways boost sales.
