Oil is being an important fuel for generating thermal energy and electricity and the demand for oil remains high. Oil is also used for various applications in industry, including as a component in the manufacturing of plastics and as a lubricant. Therefore, there are many benefits of oil investing.

Gasoline prices and crude oil prices on the current market are staying quite high. However, the prices for natural gas are currently near a ten-year low when the inflation adjustment is taken into consideration, If supply for natural gas would fall or the demand would increase, this creates a potential price increase and a possible buying point.

How to Invest

There are several ways one can approach gas and oil investing. For instance, you may consider investing in oil by buying stocks in various companies that are active in the oil and gas industry, or companies providing services and products to consumers. You may also aim to take advantage of the price changes for diesel, gasoline, and crude oil, approaching the gas and oil industry as a commodity.

  1. ETFs or Mutual Funds

Another way of investing in the gas and oil industry is to buy shares in gas and oil -focused ETFs or mutual funds. This way you can avoid the direct risk related to the commodity spot prices, while gaining significant exposure to the commodity without tying your fortune too much to any one company.

  1. ADRs or Large Cap Stock

Large cap stock and ADRs can help you gaining significant exposure to oil and gas via companies that are publicly traded. For instance, one of the most well known of these oil companies is Exxon-Mobile. You also have the option of buying stock in companies such as Chevron, PetroChina, British Petroleum, Marathon Oil, ConocoPhilips, Gazprom, Royal Dutch Shell, and many others. You have the opportunity to buy direct exposure to these oil companies by buying ADRs or shares through your broker.

  1. Futures Contracts

You can purchase gas and oil future contracts and other derivatives. However, you should proceed with caution since they can be risky and may not worth much at their expiration term.

  1. Limited Partnerships and Micro-cap or Small Stock

If you would prefer a more direct approach by directly buying equity in a smaller project or company, you may consider investing into a limited partnership or in a micro-cap stock. This field of investing is usually more specialized and for access you would need to hire a broker’s services specialized in this industry. You may also deal directly with company’s management for negotiation a placement opportunity in case that you dispose of a high amount available to invest.
