Concentration (Part 2) is the eleventh in my 'Wealth' series of original copyrighted WakeUp2Wealth Press Releases written by Tom Riach (that's me above) from my home in the sunny south of Portugal.

Lack of concentration is thankfully, and perhaps surprising to some, a problem which is relatively easy to remedy. However, as with so many things in life, it requires some hard work and application. So I resolved to work on my concentration. I took my cue from millionaire Mark Fisher and his impressive “The Instant Millionaire” best seller. I could equally have learned the same from yoga, Budha or any of the practitioners of spiritual calm and inner awareness techniques.

I learned some incredibly simple, yet hard to master, exercises which I practice to this day. The best exercise is picking an object to stare at. Something beautiful and relaxing is best, my preference is to gaze at a rose because of its incredible beauty and serenity. As my favourite flower it has throughout my life been a source of great peace and calm to me. (It is worth noting that many, many other hugely successful 5%ers, millionaires and business magnates have also discovered the rose as an object of concentration). A quiet room, rural spot or other solitary location is absolutely necessary.

The exercise is to totally clear the mind of all thoughts and to focus on the rose. You may blink but you must not alter your gaze from the rose. The ultimate target is to be able to concentrate on the heart of the rose and to have your mind devoid of any thoughts for thirty minutes. Not easy, but with practice all is possible. Those who have achieved this level of thirty minute perfect calm are already extremely advanced. But when starting for the first time your target will be thirty seconds! Then gradually increase the time by small increments until the day arrives when you too can maintain the concentration for the full thirty minutes. To progress you will have to do it every day and, once established as part of your daily routine, it must be continued so as a lifetime practice.

Apart from the powerful concentration ability you will develope in every aspect of your life (and you will be consciously aware of this as time passes), the exercise itself is incredibly relaxing and invigourating. The sensation following a period of concentration exercise is a dual one of great peacefulness but also renewal of the kind one experiences after a refreshing nap.

The second exercise I will highlight is that of repeating aloud a mantra while

concentrating. The object of mantras is to imbue your subconscious with positive

thoughts which, in time, will become part of your inner core being. That is, they will replace the negativity, fear and self doubt instilled to a greater or lesser degree in all our subconsciouses from birth and through our formative childhood years. I have a couple of favourites which I use most often. As a lifelong athlete it is not surprising that both are adaptions from the script of “Chariots of Fire”, the superbly inspirational story of human endeavour and triumph over ones inner self.

My mantras state - “Today I will run like the wind. Let the world watch in awe and wonder!” And - “Today I'm going to take them all on and I'm going to run them off their feet!”

By repeating my mantras aloud every day, at least one hundred times each, I not only maintain and improve my power of concentration, I also renew in myself my self-belief. In fact, it is undoubtedly true that self-belief can grow from improved concentration and conversely, improved concentration brings improved results which nurture self-belief. So work on improving your powers of concentration and watch your performances at work and at play get better and better every day.
