I've spoken elsewhere of the importance of asking for and using O.P.M. (Other People's Money) whenever and where-ever possible in your wealth accumulation strategy. But another thing to ask for as well as money, are items or goods which could assist you or your business. I call these F.O.C. items. Something which comes to you Free of Charge is often as good as cash in hand. It's amazing what people and businesses throw out. So ask them before they do chuck the stuff. What is surplus and useless to one person could be invaluable to you!

If you are in business shop around for F.O.C. items. Also try to make the business self-financing. By that I mean, don't use your own capital or borrowed money but rather use your customers' or clients' money. O.P.M. in other words! How? Well cash businesses are best. That's where people pay you cash up front for goods or services. There's no waiting for weeks or even months for invoices to be settled. Your customers' money runs your business rather your own resources being drained.

If providing a service, arrange for your clients to pay you by monthly subscription on bankers direct debit. That way you have a positive cash flow from day one and know exactly how much money is coming in each month and when. Often you will be getting paid ahead of actually doing the work. Your clients will also appreciate the easy payment method with no big bill to shock them at some future date. Everyone wins!

If dealing in goods it's best not to stock them. That ties up cash. Arrange payment on a commission basis from your supplier even if it means taking a smaller mark up. Have your supplier deliver directly to your customer. Then you don't need storage and you've no handling charges.

Where money owed to you is a problem, look at what goods or items your creditor may have that could be of value to you. I've collected vehicles, office equipment and tools in the past, oh! and quite a few free dinners! Who says there's no such thing as a free meal? A good F.O.C. arrangement gets you paid, saves you stress, gets the other guy off the hook and thereby creates good will AND it often leads to profit when moving stuff on. It's win win.
