Of all the business, marketing and sales principles which I have learned and applied over the years, there is one sales principle which stands out above all the rest. It is of course a simple principle and it should of course be applied regularly and repetitively.

The principle and the practice actually comprises of three elements as follows :

  1. Never try to sell anything to anyone until they first ask you!

  2. Always follow up a request for your goods or services by supplying something of value free!

  3. Then never supply the goods or services until the prospect first pays you!

In employing this 3 step philosophy in practice means that all your intial sales efforts are aimed not at getting the prospect to buy from you but at getting the prospect to ask you to supply your goods or services.

You see, when the prospect asks for your assistance he feels that he is in control and is bound to listen to your proposal. Thus he does not feel that he is being sold to. It's similar to browsing in a store. Do you prefer that the assistant approaches you or do you like to approach the assistant only once you have found something of interest?

So always, always follow these three simple steps and you will find that :

  • You cut out all time wasters, as much as 90% of contacts

  • You thus free up your own time to concentrate on the 10% of genuine buyers

  • You create in prospects a perception of value in your product and of professionalism and integrity in you

  • You never experience the disappointment and bitterness of work done for no reward

  • You create a bank of satisfied no-hassle clients, happy to recommend you to friends and colleagues

Therefore it is vitally necessary to understand that until a prospect first asks you for your product and then pays you for it, you do not have a client.

In fact, when you attempt to sell your product to a prospect who has not both asked for and paid for it, it is a certainty that you will find yourself spending (read wasting)! an inordinate amount of time and effort for no reward. In other words, high hassle, no return work.

'Good' clients on the other hand, will have specifically asked you to provide your goods or services and will have happily paid up front for them. These clients will by definition be low-hassle, high reward.
