There is no substitute for real life experience. But sometimes this can take the form of time spent in the company of someone who possesses wisdom which you lack. From the countless such encounters which have featured heavily in my life and thus helped shape my destiny, following are two of the most significant. Each experience, innocuous though it might seem at first glance, literally changed my life. Who knows, reading of them might change your life too ….. ?

What Is The Difference? - Experience 1.

The flamboyant and garrulous business magnate was holding court in his favourite west end wine bar surrounded by an adoring throng of young wannabe entrepreneurs. He pointed dramatically to the car park where sat his brand new Mercedes coupe, conspicuous among the ragtaggle of second hand Fords, Fiats and other dilapidated minor marques which surrounded it. “Tell me guys,” he demanded loudly, goading his prey, “Tell me what is the difference between my super Mercedes Benz top of the range luxury limousine gleaming out there and your sad and poxy beat up heaps of scrap? Look outside, look at them, tell me what is the difference?” Silence followed, accompanied by shuffling of feet and puzzled glances while the great man eyed his audience, a wide mischievous smile bridging his jaw. At last one young hopeful coughed nervously and ventured the obvious, “Well your car is a Mercedes and mine isn't.” “No it isn't is it?” the top man scolded, “It isn't even close is it? But I'll tell you something else that your car isn't. Would you like to know what that something is young man?” The junior swallowed hard and stumbled out a dry-throated, “Well … er … yes, what isn't my car?” “Well for starters it isn't a car,” roared the reply, “That rust-bucket is a disgrace to the very word, but I'll tell you something else that it isn't … it isn't paid for!” A pause. “Well I'm right aren't I?” A begrudging nod of agreement. “And I'll tell you all something else and I guarantee that I'm 100% right; there's not one of those deplorable apologies for wheels out there which is not on credit, you're all paying them up at some exorbitant cost … and then … then you're borrowing on top of that again to make ends meet. I'm right aren't I?” Not one voice was raised in dissent; most present looked downward and felt kind of ashamed. Now, with the full attention of all secured, the magnate continued, “Now look at my Mercedes Benz limousine, look at the bonnet (hood), what do you see there?” Everyone quickly agreed that the famous three-pointed star was the object of his question and they were in fact correct. “But,” he carried on, “Do you know what the three points of the star stand for? I'll bet you don't, so I'll tell you. The three points of the star stand for,” and here he spelled it out, slow and clear, “Paid …. In ... Cash!” And with that he slammed his hand on the table causing all present to jump and some to tremble, “And THAT gentlemen is the difference – now do you get it?”

I was that young man mentioned and yes I did get it. Within twelve months I was free of all borrowing and to this day I have never again had personal credit of any kind.

What Is The Difference? - Experience 2.

This place doesn't suit my life style,” I confessed to Antonio, my Portuguese real estate agent friend as we relaxed over an outrageously long lunch of grilled sardines and an unwise volume of vinho verde. He drew heavily on his untipped Gitanes Brune and sized me up from narrowed eyes behind his Ray Ban wrap-arounds. “No my friend,” a hiss of blue smoke accompanied his words, “You are wrong. It is your life style which does not suit this place.” That made me think.

We were seated at a rough wooden table, on an equally rough wooden verandah which reached on to a golden sand beach and flirted with the emerald sea beyond. Fernando's tin-shack restaurant would not have survived even a cursory glance from any self-respecting environmental health inspector yet it was, and is, one of the finest restaurants at which I have ever eaten. Fresh fish and seafood to die for, prices so low that the restaurant is almost paying you to dine there, jolly camaraderie as from a bygone age and a vista of deeply sublime tranquillity. In short - Paradise! And there's dozens, if not hundreds of such native eateries all along Portugal's Algarve coast!

The difference between you and I,” Antonio continued, “Is this. If I were to sell a villa in the morning, I would shut up the office and go home to my wife and children. We would prepare a picnic basket of presunto hams and cheeses, home baked bread, garlic and olives, fresh tomatoes, figs and basil, almond cake and lots of lemonade and wine and we'd go to the beach. We would stay there and away from my work until I had spent all my profit. Only then would I return.” With the sun on my brow and the sea breeze caressing my cheeks it was not at all difficult for me to fall in with his typically Portuguese, laissez-faire view of life. And the truth is that, at that moment, such a laid back life style was already sounding totally logical. “You on the other hand!” his raised voice drew me from the idyllic trance threatening to kidnap me, “You,” he repeated accusingly, “If you were to sell a villa in the morning, you would come back in the afternoon and try to sell another one. You know how to work but you don't know how to live. I,” … and here he spiralled his index finger upward with a dramatic Latin flourish … , “I know of life. And THAT my friend is the difference between you and I.”

This conversation took place many years ago and it did indeed make me think. So much so that not long afterwards I took the decision to relocate abroad and with it radically change my life style. It is by far and away the best thing I have ever done. Now, most days, I relax with local amigos over outrageously long lunches of grilled fresh fish and insane volumes of vinho tinto, consumed at provocatively romantic tin-shack beach restaurants. And, were I in the real estate business (which I'm not), I swear that I would never never ever, even remotely consider trying to sell a second villa in the afternoon had I already sold one in the morning!

You see, today I live and 'work' in the sunny south of Portugal. Need I say more?
