Three Letters And A Corporal

”Three Letters And A Corporal” is an original copyright Press Release sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal.

Huddled in the soaking cold of the trench, the Corporal grabbed the letters thrust at him by the mail runner and immediately ripped them open.

The first was from his mother. It spoke of home and longing to see him return safely.

The second was from his sweetheart. It spoke of love and desire and a wish to hold him in her arms.

The third was from a complete stranger. It told how the writer and his family were homeless and without food and begged for help.

The Corporal quickly scribbled his replies on the backs of the originals, for time was short.

To his mother he wrote - “It is hard but I am well. Thank you for all that you have done for me. I hope you will be proud of me.”

To his sweetheart he wrote - “I love you and hope to be with you soon. But if things go badly you must promise to carry on and enjoy a full life.”

And in the third reply …. in the third reply he wrote - “I am sorry to hear of your plight. Enclosed is my last pay cheque. I hope it helps.”

Then he went 'over the top'.

The Corporal you see, although young and under stress – or perhaps because of it - realised some things very fundamental to being.

His mother and his home were of a past that could never return.

His sweetheart and her love were of a future that might never be.

But the war and the plight of the strangers were in the here and now and he could do something about them. So he did. He did what he had to do and he did the best that he could do.

POWER POINT - “Live life in the present and always be the best that you can be.”

So honour those who give of  their best for us in all times and honour yourself by being your best self each and every day.
