How To Be Self Employed” is the 4th in my 'How To' series of original copyright Press Releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal.

Wake Up 2 Wealth

As a self-employed person I have always viewed my business as consisting of three of Me :

Me 1 is the owner or shareholder of the business. I set up the business as an investment for Me and to provide Me with income.

Me 2 is the MD of the company. My role is to ensure the business runs effectively and profitably. I am answerable to the shareholder and responsible for over-seeing all operational aspects of the business, including -

Me 3 who is the sole employee of the company. I am responsible for day to day work and activity within the business. I answer to Me 2, the MD.

When Me 2 does his job well he will ensure that the business remains healthy and he will motivate and support Me 3, including ensuring that discipline within the business is maintained eg. good time-keeping, impeccable standard of work, meticulous financial management, no waste - and no pilfering!

So, in simple terms, when the business is healthy it will be able to provide Me 1 with a good investment and regular income. I look after the business, it looks after me!

If I don't look after the business well? ... then all three of me are stuffed!

This approach to practicing the management of self-employment in this manner is of course no different to the standard model which governs the successful stewardship of almost any business. An investor in the open market would want to invest in a sound company. That is a company which is :

  • Well established, a leader in its field

  • Has a sought after product or service

  • Possesses top quality management

  • Experiences steady growth

  • Has a strong customer base

  • Is financially strong

  • Has low or no debt

  • And pays a good dividend

That's what I want my company to be.

Were I a Managing Director of a company, I would want to know that I had investors behind me not looking for quick profit but who trust me to get on with the job of building the kind of company described above. I would have :

  • Pride in the company

  • Confidence in my ability and professionalism

  • A desire to establish the company as the best in the business

  • And that's what I would want to be – the best in the business

And were I an employee of a company, I would want :

  • To know that if I gave of my best that my efforts would be recognised, valued and rewarded

  • That I had the trust of management and was seen as an important part of a team in which everyone was pulling in the same direction

So the only difference between my 'self-employed company' and a bigger institution would be the fact that in the self-employed situation I must fulfill all the roles of the business – but hey! that is quite a difference!

It means that, not only is there no other personnel other than myself to perform the various tasks but, crucially, there is no other person to enforce the discipline required of me in conducting and enacting all aspects of the business. All the disciplines of work practice and of marketing and sales and of financial management and of every other of the myriad duties and activities involved in the day to day running of the business must be imposed by myself on myself!

POWER POINT - “When self-employed, all the discipline inherent in running a successful business must be rigourously self-imposed.”

So get this factor right, the need for rigourous and constant self-discipline, and you will be well on the way to successful self-employment.

I live and work in the sunny south of Portugal. Need I say more?
