My Christmas Carol” is an original copyright Press Release sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal.

Joseph Tom Riach, Mastering the Art of Making Money, Author, Business Adviser, Entrepreneur, Wake Up Leisure and Learning Breaks, Personal Mentoring and Business Guidance, Freelance Writer, My Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens

MY CHRISTMAS CAROL

The businessman stuffed a couple of large denomination notes into the hand held out by the homeless wanderer and then gifted him all of his loose change too. All that is save for one coin which he carried with him at all times. It was a coin very special to and cherished by the man of fortune for it was his permanent reminder of days long gone when he too had been destitute …..

It was Christmass eve, homeless, cold and hungry Tom thrust his palms deep into thread-bare pockets in a fruitless attempt to find some warmth. One freezing hand settled on the only two coins he possessed. He jingled the coins thoughtfully and then, summoning up his resolve, went to the nearby phone booth and, inserting one of the coins, dialled the familiar number. His grown daughter's cheerful welcome raised his spirits. Unaware of his plight she engaged in playful seasonal banter until Tom, swallowing his final vestiges of poverty-shredded pride, did the hardest thing he had ever done in his life. He asked his daughter for money. But she easily responded to his plea for help, some cash would be wired to arrive quickly.

The task he had been dreading having been accomplished, Tom turned his attention to how in the meantime he would keep himself fed. Soon he made his way to a local bakery and sought out the owner. To the baker Tom made the proposal that he would, entirely free of charge, place an attractive advert for the bakery in a prominent position on his (Tom's) website, a site with a considerable local following. But Tom would need to first sample the baker's wares in order to establish the quality of the goods to be promoted! An understanding nod and grin from the baker accompanied the box of pies and rolls which he handed to Tom as he slapped his shoulder and wished him festive cheer.

Next Tom crossed the road to another local business where he was familiar to the owner. To this entrepreneur Tom proposed that he would, again entirely free of charge, build a new direct marketing programme 'guaranteed' to increase his business substantially. But to do this Tom would need to work with the businessman's office computer as he did not have one of his own, plus the work would need to be done over-night when the office was empty and the computers not otherwise in use. Tom started work that very night.

Tom now had a small amount of money to tide him over, food enough to feed himself for a week and a roof over his head at nights for a month or more. Most importantly he had given himself a life-line, a glimmer of hope, something to build on. He didn't waste the opportunity.

Within a year the marketing programme devised and implemented by Tom for the local business had increased that entrepreneur's client base two-fold; the bakery prospered and continued to reward Tom with free pies for many years; and in return for her 'life-saving investment' Tom's daughter benefited to the tune of many thousands of dollars.

In adversity Tom had learned humility and his dire situation had driven him to find imaginative solutions to his plight. His fortune was restored but Tom would be forever a changed man.”

The business man pondered awhile on the memory of those dark days, sentimentally fingering his lucky coin saved from all those years ago. Then he wished the street dweller well and walked the short distance to the centre for homeless people. Once inside he discarded his warm jacket, rolled up his sleeves and enthusiastically made his way to the kitchen to commence serving Christmas dinners to the needy. He smiled inwardly. This was far and away his favourite part of Christmas!

POWER POINT - “With humility comes compassion and inner joy .”

END

'My Christmas Carol' is based on real events.

Wishing everyone a peaceful festive season
