"Punishment and Reward" is the 7th in my Tom's Summer Shorts series of holiday press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal

PUNISHMENT AND REWARD

As a self-employed person I've long practised the discipline of 'Punishment and Reward'. It's a simple and, in my view, necessary discipline if you work for yourself. It's no different after all than could be the case working for an employer who might, for instance, award you a bonus when you do well or might fire you for failure! So when you are your own boss it is good practice to behave likewise. Personally I've never felt so disenchanted with my own performance at work as to feel the need to fire myself (!) but I do punish myself in other ways when I feel I've under-performed. This takes the form of denying myself pleasures which could include no wine with my dinner or, in some instances, no dinner at all or I might cancel time off for myself or a proposed trip abroad – yes I've done that! On the other hand when I have a good day, close a sale, win a contract or complete a major project then I reward myself with restaurant visits, leisure breaks or foreign travel.

POWER POINT - “The prospect of gain and the fear of pain are each powerful motivators.”

Yes, a punishment and reward policy helps to keep me focussed and motivated and to maintain a high level of performance. It's an essential part of any success strategy. Make it a part of yours.

I am Tom Riach. I live and work in the sunny south of Portugal. Need I say more?

ABOUT JOSEPH TOM RIACH

It took me some years to establish myself in business but I believe that in life only the most resolute of tryers will prevail and after several years of a bank account in a permanent state of cardiac arrest my perseverance began to pay!

I became a successful Business Consultant, Investment Adviser and award-winning Salesperson and Marketing Professional and I coined the term 'Creative Solutions' to describe my work in devising and implementing innovative approaches to situations in business, commerce and industry (some call it touble-shooting). From my successes I grew my own group of small companies.

By later years I had realised that sheer sweat and toil did not represent the smartest or swiftest routes to wealth. Entrepreneurs, I observed, had always existed able to create fortunes from little apparent effort and I became increasingly fascinated by this phenomenon. I set out to emulate this approach and such was my success that by 1996 I could 'retire' at an early age to the tranquility and calm of South West France. I later moved on to Southern Portugal.

CONTACT ME – I'll be thrilled to hear from you!

The life of which you dream is HERE within your grasp!
