"Do You Want Impulse Buyers?” is the 9th in my Tom's Autumn Rambles series of original copyright press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal

DO YOU WANT IMPULSE BUYERS?

I rarely if ever buy on impulse - my canny Scottish upbringing easily sees to that - and neither do I wish my clients to buy from me on impulse.

Supermarkets of course are the place where we see an appeal to impulse buy most clearly demonstrated. We all know exactly why those chocolate bars and tasty offers are placed right by the checkout. But for sweets, toys or t-shirts sold to impulse in this way in major stores, there's unlikely to be difficulty should a buyer afterwards be unhappy. Brands are mostly well established ones and unwanted items can be readily exchanged on the next supermarket visit.

But for the smaller business selling your own brand goods or services or involved in selling goods or services not in the fast-moving, light consumer goods and foods retail sectors, is promoting buying on impulse desirable? Do you want clients who haven't given due consideration to your proposal? Should you not first be intent on relationship development and building trust and reputation? You certainly can't afford to have half sold clients or those who bought in haste spreading negative comment.

And even if working as a commission agent or affiliate where the goods/services may have existing brand recognition, agents still needs to establish your own personal reputation in order to win sales ahead of competing agents promoting the same goods/services. So in these circumstances encouraging impulse buying is neither desirable nor credible.

What is needed is a staged promotional process which first gives buyers the opportunity to establish trust in you, then your goods or service. You can still instil a sense of urgency in your call to action. But prospects must have a fair degree of certainty that they can depend on you to deliver with integrity a quality product or service which is everything you have said it will be.

So set out your stall and implement a strategy designed to develop a relationship first and a client second. Then you will find that you only ever experience a high quality brand of client, good payers satisfied with you and your offer … and critically … happy to recommend you to others! Leave the promotion of impulse buying to the supermarkets.
