A CHRISTMAS LETTER TO GOD

Shortly before Christmas a letter arrived at the Post Office sorting department addressed simply “To God”. So it was passed upstairs to the supervisor who opened it to see if there was any further information inside which might assist with its delivery. He found only that the sender had given her name and address and had written the following :

Dear God, Christmas is approaching and I had intended celebrating the birth of your son in this my 90th year with a few dear friends who have also been around for quite some time. We usually get together at my place and I prepare a goose and all the trimmings for the one dinner in the year which we can afford. As an extra special treat I also light the fire and we roast chestnuts before it. It sure makes up for the rest of the time when we struggle through ... cold, lonely and with little to eat.

Throughout the year we each save a few cents per week scraped together from performing menial chores such as cleaning drains and scrubbing doorsteps to put towards our special feast in Christ's honour. It's all that makes life worth living. This year we had saved $100 and I, as the keeper of the money, set off yesterday to buy the food for our meal. But I left my purse with the money in it on the bus and it is lost. So we will have no Christmas dinner this year.

So this letter is by way of my apology to you for the fact that I and my aged friends will not be celebrating your son's birthday this time round. Please forgive us, but we will be thinking of him and of You and will try to do better next year.

Your faithful servant ….."

The supervisor read this, tears welling in his eyes. So moved was he that he quickly resolved to help. So he showed the letter to all in the sorting office and quickly a 'whip round' was organised. Entering into the Christmas spirit everyone contributed, a dollar here, two dollars there. Soon $95 dollars had been raised. The money was immediately and anonymously dispatched to the old woman.

Soon after Christmas another letter arrived at the Post Office sorting department also addressed “To God”. It was written in the same hand as the previous one and was passed upstairs to the supervisor as before. Again he opened it and read the following :

Dear God, Myself and my friends were, after all, able to celebrate Christmas. We enjoyed a magnificent feast of goose and all the trimmings. We were well fed for three whole days and the house warmed with a roaring fire. We cannot thank you enough for the miraculous blessing you have bestowed upon us through your mysterious cash donation. Praise be to the Lord!

Your faithful servant …..

PS We had to make do without the chestnuts, only $95 arrived. It must have been those thieving bollards at the post office!”
