Scrapping In The School Yard

"Scrapping In The School Yard” is the 3rd in my Tom's Winter Warmers series of original copyright press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal

Scrapping in the school yard was an almost daily occurence in the early teen years of my youth. Some lads were of course more active in this department of extra curricular activity than others but most got into a brawl with a class mate at some time or another. The fights were more part of the necessary rite of passage to manhood rather than anything more sinister but they could, never the less, be brutal. And like any area of life or any activity, some participants were simply better at it than others.

Given my ringside view and not infrequent personal involvement in these skirmishes I arrived at conclusions regarding the superiority of the regular winners which would, in the same tradition as that of many childhood games, stand me in good stead in later life. Other than learning the rather obvious negative health benefits of broken noses and cracked teeth, I learned these three critical lessons :

The first was that winning had little to do with size or strength or even technique. But had everything to do with attitude!

The second was that winners invariably struck first. They didn't hang around and give the initiative to their opponent.

And the third was that winners chose their fights carefully, only venturing into conflict when certain of success.

I have adopted and practiced all three of these 'attributes' throughout my life and business career. There is no doubt in my mind that they have been central to my success. Let's look a little more closely at their significance.

Attitude : Being ruthless, assertive, self-confident, unflinching and totally committed. When you deeply believe in your own invincibility and display that with courage and conviction then few can stand against you. The losers are beaten before they even square up and are overcome with the ferocity of your onslaught. Pretty … no. Effective … totally.

Strike first : Several popular expressions come to mind – 'Fortune favours the brave' … 'Time and tide wait for no man' … 'Let others wait and wonder' … even … 'Possession is nine points of the law'. In other words act and take control, establish a position of strength first and let others argue later if they wish but from a position of weakness. The first blow is most often the decisive one.

Pick your fights - Don't let the fights pick you! Winners fight only when certain of success and thus develop a reputation as … winners! This then snowballs and becomes self-fulfilling. Once seen as winners then they generally are. Additionally, by not competing when unsure of victory they open the door to negotiation and compromise from which all parties may benefit without conflict or hostility. Plus they can defer a punch-up to a later time when they can be in position to be sure of victory!

Yes the school yard is to a school as the cocktail party is to a business convention … where the real action is and an awesome training ground.

I am Tom Riach. I live and write in the sunny south of Portugal.
