ASK A STUPID QUESTION

Was there a pupil in your class at school who the rest of the class laughed at for regularly asking what they perceived to be silly questions? That pupil was me.

Then in later years at college, night school or adult education was there also that one inevitable student capable of reducing the class to hysterical laughter with equally stupid sounding questions? That was me too.

And had you been a member of my profession in my early years in its ranks, or the proverbial fly on the wall, then there in the front row at conferences, seminars and training schools you'd likewise find me firing off my salvo of questions weird and bizarre, to the perplexion of the speakers and the entertainment of all.

Myself and my colleague Duncan (he being similarly endowed with lateral thinking inquisitiveness – there's few of us about)! had learned that we could show at the last minute to these events because our seats in the front row were assured by the fact that venues tended to fill from the back rows forward. Plus, in many instances, our front row seats were kept for us by those intent on ensuring a good laugh! So, one way or another, we were always best placed to easily interrupt presentations and harangue speakers with our 'stupid' questions.

But as our 'fame' spread, over time so did its nature. We had you see grown to become two of the most successful people in the industry. So whereas previously our questions had been greeted with guffaws and the rolling of eyes, now when we interrupted and rose to speak an attentive silence descended. Delegates leaned forward to better hear what was being queried. The mood had become one of - what rich wisdom is in the question?

So without being aware of it our audiences had themselves become by association askers of stupid questions! Somewhere in the collective conscious had been seeded the realisation that being bright, educated, intellectual even, wasn't bringing wealth or success. But that an enquiring mind and a desire to know even to the point of appearing stupid to your peers was what produced results.

Inevitably therefore, both Duncan and myself in time found a constant stream of inquirers seeking us out, each one primed with the same old hopeless question of the inspirationally lame – “What is the secret of your success?”

Of course we had a ready answer - “Ask a stupid question!”

I am Tom Riach. I live and write in the sunny south of Portugal.

ABOUT JOSEPH TOM RIACH

It took me some years to establish myself in business but I believe that in life only the most resolute of tryers will prevail and after several years of a bank account in a permanent state of cardiac arrest my perseverance began to pay!

I became a successful Business Consultant, Investment Adviser and award-winning Salesperson and Marketing Professional and I coined the term 'Creative Solutions' to describe my work in devising and implementing innovative approaches to situations in business, commerce and industry (some call it touble-shooting). From my successes I grew my own group of small companies.

By later years I had realised that sheer sweat and toil did not represent the smartest or swiftest routes to wealth. Entrepreneurs, I observed, had always existed able to create fortunes from little apparent effort and I became increasingly fascinated by this phenomenon. I set out to emulate this approach and such was my success that by 1996 I could 'retire' at an early age to the tranquility and calm of South West France. I later moved on to Southern Portugal.

CONTACT ME – I'll be thrilled to hear from you!

The life of which you dream is HERE within your grasp!
