"Live And Let Die, Give And Get By”  is the 9th in my 2017Tom's Summer Shorts series of holiday press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal

LIVE AND LET DIE, GIVE AND GET BY

Are you a 'Live and Let Die' or a 'Give and Get By' kind of guy? Let's find out.

You are the owner of a vast fortune, built up over many years through hard work and dedication. Do you :

* Keep your wealth to yourself, spending lavishly and leading a jet set party life style? (Live and Let Die)

or

* Distribute substantial amounts to worthwhile causes, charities and the disadvantaged, retaining just enough money for yourself on which to live modestly? (Give and Get By)

There's no right or wrong answer to the above but, at first glance, the second option does appear to be the more morally correct. But is it?

The 'Live and Let Die' guy through his extravagant spending is spreading wealth into the economy, feeding businesses, creating employment, incurring tax. It's the law of abundance at work, the wealth he has created in turn helps drive the economy.

But 'Give and Get By' is also stoking the economy. He chooses to relinquish control of his money by giving most of it away but after that the charities or other entities in receipt of his donations employ staff and incur expenditures, so that money too circulates.

So, apart from how the money is at outset directed by the respective individuals, in both cases the cash ends up in general circulation and benefiting all. 'Give and Get By' will justifiably feel good about directly assisting worthy causes. But 'Live and Let Die' will know that he is also feeding the masses, so can be quietly satisfied too.

Of course there's the question of preferred life style, each to his own. One with modest tastes and needs may quite well feel they have no use for lots of money and prefer that someone else has the responsibility of dispensing of it; while a flambouyant personality will be more than happy to splash the cash ... and be seen doing it!

But what is undeniable is that those who work with dedication and persevere over many years to accumulate wealth have the right to choose in just what way they dispose of it. And they can derive satisfaction from the knowledge that their endeavours ultimately influence the livlihood and well-being of countless others and that, directly or indirectly, their achievements benefit all.

As for the moral high ground … 'Live and Let Die' may appear less caring and 'Give and Get By' may want to be seen to be caring … but minds and motives are rarely straightforward.

I am Tom Riach. I live and write in the sunny south of Portugal.

ABOUT JOSEPH TOM RIACH

It took me some years to establish myself in business but I believe that in life only the most resolute of tryers will prevail and after several years of a bank account in a permanent state of cardiac arrest my perseverance began to pay!

I became a successful Business Consultant, Investment Adviser and award-winning Salesperson and Marketing Professional and I coined the term 'Creative Solutions' to describe my work in devising and implementing innovative approaches to situations in business, commerce and industry (some call it touble-shooting). From my successes I grew my own group of small companies.

By later years I had realised that sheer sweat and toil did not represent the smartest or swiftest routes to wealth. Entrepreneurs, I observed, had always existed able to create fortunes from little apparent effort and I became increasingly fascinated by this phenomenon. I set out to emulate this approach and such was my success that I could 'retire' at an early age to the tranquility and calm of south west France. I later moved on to southern Portugal.
