The Bullet That Killed Me

"The Bullet That Killed Me”  is the 11th in my 2017Tom's Summer Shorts series of holiday press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal

The bullet that killed me was travelling at one thousand feet per second. It was fired from a Smith and Wesson .45 ACP by a shallow youth much given to using the word 'respect'. Yet he himself possessed neither self-respect nor a microfibre of understanding of the meaning of the word.

In the improbable event that he survived to mid age then he might have grown to know of the fragility and preciousness of life, he might have learned to empathise. And, if he did, he might have wondered about the man whose life he stole all those years before. Who was he? What was he like?

He'd have discovered when researching that I, like himself, had been a wild lad given to some violence. But also that I'd been brought up to honour my elders, authority and the rights of others. So my natural rebeliousness was tempered by respect.

He'd have learned that my uncompromising and dispassionate approach to life and business had brought me success but that I only experienced joy and fulfillment once I understood and practiced compassion and forgiveness.

And he might have come to see that the bullet discharged from his handgun on my fatal day, had it been human and possessing of integrity and empathy, would have declined the uneven contest with my brittle skull. It would at least have prefered a face to face confrontation with an opponent of equal magnitude and stature. Better still it may have chosen to stay in the chamber.

And in so doing the bullet that killed me would have chosen honour and respect. That's my choice too.

What's yours?

I am Tom Riach. I live and write in the sunny south of Portugal.

It took me some years to establish myself in business but I believe that in life only the most resolute of tryers will prevail and after several years of a bank account in a permanent state of cardiac arrest my perseverance began to pay!

I became a successful Business Consultant, Investment Adviser and award-winning Salesperson and Marketing Professional and I coined the term 'Creative Solutions' to describe my work in devising and implementing innovative approaches to situations in business, commerce and industry (some call it trouble-shooting). From my successes I grew my own group of small companies.

By later years I had realised that sheer sweat and toil did not represent the smartest or swiftest routes to wealth. Entrepreneurs, I observed, had always existed able to create fortunes from little apparent effort and I became increasingly fascinated by this phenomenon. I set out to emulate this approach and such was my success that I could 'retire' at an early age to the tranquility and calm of south west France. I later moved on to southern Portugal.

The life of which you dream is HERE within your grasp!
