THE SHELF LIFE PRINCIPLE

Among the myriad of factors you need to be aware of in order to be an effective business practitioner, one of the most significant is what I call 'the Shelf Life' principle. This basically lays down that everything that you do and everyone that you deal with has a limited time span within which they are fully effective and/or of maximum value. When that time has passed then they must be discarded and/or replaced. So it's critical for the success of your enterprise to :

  • Know when that time is imminent

    and

  • Act decisively without fear or favour

The optimum period of time in question will of course vary from just a few weeks in some instances to many, many years in others. As regards employees for instance, I have parted company with more than just a few within hours, days or weeks, many after only a year or two. But others of genuine commitment and value to myself or my enterprises were with me throughout my career. The crucial thing is to be able to differentiate between quality worth persevering with and those whose futures would be better catered for elsewhere.

And the same applies as regards clients, contracts and projects. Some (hopefully all or many) will have shelf lives as long as your own career. But all need constant review and some will not be of benefit kept on board beyond a certain point, so they have to go. This itself is a policy of review and renewal and creates space for fresh, more appropriate opportunities to be pursued and to occupy your time and efforts.

There is also the question of growth. Expansion of your enterprise must not come at the cost of retaining unproductive personnel or unprofitable clientel whose presence is paid for by new and rewarding projects. Retaining bodies or contracts just to make up the numbers is never a good idea. Better to do without as regards staff until people of the right pedigree are available; and the same applies to enterprises which have outlived their usefulness.

So work your employees and your contracts to the maximum benefit of all, while you can. But be aware that people and circumstances change, not always for the better, and that a parting of ways will in many cases become inevitable.

I am Tom Riach. I live and write in the sunny south of Portugal.

ABOUT JOSEPH TOM RIACH

It took me some years to establish myself in business but I believe that in life only the most resolute of tryers will prevail and after several years of a bank account in a permanent state of cardiac arrest my perseverance began to pay!

I became a successful Business Consultant, Investment Adviser and award-winning Salesperson and Marketing Professional and I coined the term 'Creative Solutions' to describe my work in devising and implementing innovative approaches to situations in business, commerce and industry (some call it trouble-shooting). From my successes I grew my own group of small companies.

Today I host my 'Wake Up Leisure and Learning Breaks', personal mentoring and business guidance, in the tranquility and calm of the sunny south of Portugal and I am the author of several best-selling books on the subject of successful living.

CONTACT ME - I'll be thrilled to hear from you!

The life of which you dream is HERE within your grasp!
