The Fag Pack Quote

"The Fag Pack Quote”  is the 4th in my 2018 series of 'Winter Warmers' original copyright press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal


I have since my early years in busines had, and still retain, a certain affection for what I term 'the Fag Pack Quote'. I first saw it being used many years ago by the Managing Director of a substantial, national, building services company as he spoke to a potential client on a street corner outside their offices in Glasgow. For those unfamiliar with the practice or the terminology I'll describe the scenario.

The MD and the client-to-be are engaged in an informal background chat as they walk to their cars. The prospect casually queries as to what the MD's proposed contract might in general terms cost. At that point the MD takes his packet of cigarettes (fags) from his pocket, an expensive pen from another and proceeds to do a quick calculation while scribbling the numbers on the 'fag' packet. In just a few minutes he has calculated a figure, shows it to the prospect and they shake hands on the deal! He signs off the 'quotation', gives the packet, with cigarettes(!), to the prospect and they arrange a time and place to finalise the contract. That is the 'fag pack' quote!

Of course you have to be at the top of your game, fully versed and respected in all aspects of your business and profession to have the composure and credibility to pull this off. And the fag packet could be any scrap of paper, a ticket stub, envelope, paper handkerchief or table napkin.

Now I mention this not only to enlighten and entertain you but because this method of working encapsulates a way of doing business which cuts out all the 'bull and bluster', posing, lawyers, accountants, time-wasting and cost. It is just so basic, simple and effective that you can't help but admire it – well I certainly do! And it's fun! I've practiced it myself often and still do.
