"Are You Believeable?”   is the 5th in my 2018 series of 'Summer Shorts' original copyright press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal


Are you believeable? You'd better be because a client will not do business with a commercial entity or a sales person who they find to be incredible, that's as in not believeable. And the surest way to plant doubt in the mind of your client about your credibility is to over inform or talk too much. The reality is that clients relate to those who take the time to listen to them and find out what's important to them. Nobody is bored or turned off when they are talking. They are bored when you are talking!

So don't overstate the benefits of your goods or services (over selling), rather tell your client what it can't do (a take away) so that they'll better believe what it will do! Then shut up and wait for them to ask a question. This will come as a buying signal so don't be afraid to tough out the silence. This is what top sales people are masters at, they don't fear losing the sale by keeping quiet..

This attitude reflects back on the client. They subconsciously lock on to it and become part of the process. You'll know when you have established credibility with them when, having disclosed to you some private or intimate detail about themselves or their situation, they say, “I don't know why I told you that,” or something similar.. They told you because they trust you!

I have always said that I know more about many of my clients than do their spouses or partners. Why do they tell me so much? Because I prompt with gentle questions sympathetic to their emotions. So they grow to know that they can trust me, rely on my discretion and that I'll never in any circumstance repeat anything they tell me. After all, they never hear me talk of or disclose information about other clients.

They do however hear me accept responsibilty for the success or otherwise of our professional relationship.

So just as an over-inflated ego and too much blarney on your part will certainly kill any prospect of a sale, credibility established in you by your displaying of a caring and emotional persona, one prepared to listen and empathise, will guarantee successful conclusions for both you and your client - every time.
