NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER

Although I write books and hope that their covers are appealing and give a good whiff of what my readers might expect to find inside, I've been long enough on the block to know that the reality may in some cases be quite different …..

I had only popped into the headquarters of the major investment company I represented as a freelance agent to drop off a couple of pieces of business I'd won and catch up on 'news', when one of the front office girls beckoned me over. She told me there was a scruffy individual in reception asking to speak to someone about 'money' but none of the regular company employed consultants would see him because he 'stank to high heaven'.

So I went through and immediately recognised the character as a slighly podgy farmer in typical scruffy garb, probably in town that day for the weekly cattle sales. I brought him a cup of tea and sat down for a chat. I soon learned that he had a stash of eighty thousand pounds hidden under the floorboards at his farm house which he now wanted to relocate to somewhere more secure due to the fact that his son had discovered the hiding place and was regularly pilfering from the hoard.

In little time I presented him with a solution to his difficulty to which he agreed and I suggested that we arrange to meet again in order for him to deposit the money with the company. But he quickly assured me that that would not be necessary and proceeded to unload large bundles of used notes from the many pockets of his tatty coat. Now I could see that he was not a chubby fellow at all but actually rather skinny!

I summoned a staff accountant to verify the transaction and for the next hour we carefully counted the cash. Yes there was just over eighty thousand pounds sterling! The paperwork was concluded and my new farmer friend departed with a hefty weight lifted from his mind – and body!

The event reminded me that we should never look up to the rich nor down on the poor. Nor judge a book by its cover as the snobbish in-house consultants had done - thereby losing out on a healthy commission, a friend for life and countless future introductions of similarly lucrative business.

I am Tom Riach. I live and write in the sunny south of Portugal.

ABOUT JOSEPH TOM RIACH

It took me some years to establish myself in business but I believe that in life only the most resolute of tryers will prevail and after several years of a bank account in a permanent state of cardiac arrest my perseverance began to pay!

I became a successful Business Consultant, Investment Adviser and award-winning Salesperson and Marketing Professional and I coined the term 'Creative Solutions' to describe my work in devising and implementing innovative approaches to situations in business, commerce and industry (some call it trouble-shooting). From my successes I grew my own group of small companies.

Today I host my 'Wake Up Leisure and Learning Breaks', personal mentoring and business guidance, in the tranquility and calm of the sunny south of Portugal and I am the author of several best-selling books on the subject of successful living.
