Don't Talk To Me About Sacrifice”   is the 12th in my 2018 series of 'Summer Shorts' original copyright press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal

DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT SACRIFICE

Not much irritates me but successful sport's stars or busy entrepreneurs who continually talk of the sacrifices they have made to get to the top sure do. Why? Because they have not made any sacrifices, what they have made are choices.

We all make choices as to how we'll spend our time, what we'll do, where we'll go and when. And the reality is that we choose to do those things which we most enjoy and which we most want to do. For the average person that means choosing to live like most other folks do – grow up, go to college, get a job (hopefully), go to the pub, party, get married, have kids, share dinner together, weekends, holidays, watch TV and enjoy those hobbies and pursuits which they most enjoy ... which they therefore choose to do!

The only difference with a super achiever, be they sports star or otherwise, is that they are determinedly focussed on one goal and they therefore choose not to follow the herd and do as everyone else does but choose instead to spend all their time pursuing their dream.

Oh yea, they may well do some of the 'ordinary' things too but they mainly choose (in the case of athletes) to put in the hurt and grunt of the long hours of physical exercise or (in the case of a determined entrepreneur) the endless hours of work ... because it's what they choose to do! And they choose to do it because it's the one activity which they most enjoy.

Yes, incredible as it may sound to those not of an atheletic or entrepreneurial bent or focussed solely on achieving excellence in some other area, the pain inherrent in aiming to be 'the best' gives great pleasure. Believe me, I've done it! And I still do enjoy a gruelling training slog or a draining business endeavour over anything else. Yes, it's fun. And to repeat my message – I do it because it's what I most enjoy and that's why I've chosen to do it.

Also, it's the doing of the activity, not the completion of it, which gives the greatest pleasure and satisfaction. So, why would I (or any athlete or entrepreneur) choose to do anything other than, or stop doing, the thing that gives us the greatest pleasure? Of course we wouldn't.

So there is no such thing as sacrifice in this respect. And that's why I get more than just a tad irritated when a highly paid athlete or an entrepreneur pursuing their chosen passion talks about making sacrifices. Choice is what it's all about.

I am Tom Riach. I live and write in the sunny south of Portugal.

ABOUT JOSEPH TOM RIACH

It took me some years to establish myself in business but I believe that in life only the most resolute of tryers will prevail and after several years of a bank account in a permanent state of cardiac arrest my perseverance began to pay!

I became a successful Business Consultant, Investment Adviser and award-winning Salesperson and Marketing Professional and I coined the term 'Creative Solutions' to describe my work in devising and implementing innovative approaches to situations in business, commerce and industry (some call it trouble-shooting). From my successes I grew my own group of small companies.

Today I host my 'Wake Up Leisure and Learning Breaks', personal mentoring and business guidance, in the tranquility and calm of the sunny south of Portugal and I am the author of several best-selling books on the subject of successful living.
