"How To Win In Business”   is the 3rd in my 2018 series of Tom's Autumn Rambles, original copyright press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal

HOW TO WIN IN BUSINESS

The title of this article, 'How To Win In Business', implies that being in business is a competitive pursuit. It is! Make no mistake, it is a tough world, cut-throat even. No place for the faint-hearted. But don't fret. It's not all blood and guts. You can compete without coming into direct conflict with others. Here's how.

* First remember that your biggest enemy is … yourself! Overcoming that adversary is your biggest challenge. Win that battle and you'll win the war too. How come?

Well, it's all about being your best self in a business context. You must aim to be the best in the business. When you become that, in every respect, then your business will be the leader in it's field, the one the others are chasing. To get ahead, and stay ahead, you must :

* Know the market. Learn everything there is to learn about the industry/market in which you are trading. Become a specialist and an authority on the subject. This will not only give you a head start on your competitors, they will also come to you for guidance!

* Know your place in the market and how to establish and improve it. Plan, prepare and execute your business with diligence. Every area of your business must be honed to perfection. That will include evaluating in depth some or all of the following disciplines, departments, activities and practices -

Accounting and financial management, legal and compliance, sales, manufacturing, operations, transportation, marketing and branding, personnel and human resources, purchasing, customer relations, communications and technology … and more

- and taking appropriate action to make them efficient, effective and best in class.

* Know your competitors – inside out! Having looked inwards at the competitor who is yourself, you must look outwards at the competition in the wider market. The good news is that this need not be a 'direct contact sport'. Yes, it can be likened to a boxing match or an athletics race, but there's an easier way than indulging in the equivalent of physical confrontation. It's really rather simple.

What you do is to repeat the exercise of analysing and equating every aspect of your competitor's business in exactly the same way, and in the same detail, as you evaluated all the processes of your own business. In this way you can know your competitor even more intimately than he knows himself! Then you can lay your own plans and act accordingly.

So first look within. Then look with the same eyes outwith. Act on what you see. That is how to win in business.
