Don't Trash The Competition

"Don't Trash The Competition”  is the 4th in my 2018 Tom's Autumn Rambles series of original copyright press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal


One thing you should never do in business is speak badly of other businesses, especially your competitors operating in the same field as yourself. Don't 'trash the competion'! Such an approach will succeed only in discrediting yourself. Why?

Firstly. In promoting your business, your focus must be on what you can do and what you do well – not on what someone else can't do or does badly.

Secondly. It brings into question your own integrity. If you are seen and heard to speak badly of a third party, what might you be saying to others about the person or client you are addressing your remarks to?

Thirdly. It is negative behaviour and will be recognised as such. People do not do business with negative individuals. They respond to upbeat and positive overtures.

Fourthly. When your opposition are lacking in certain aspects of their business or comportment, then a savvy client will find out anyway. Let the source of the 'bad news' be someone other than yourself.

Even if the client brings up himself failings or shortcomings in a competitor and asks for your verification, view or opinion on the matter do not get sucked into villifying them. Apart from other considerations you could be guilty of defamation. That aside, it is best that you sidestep any criticisms of your opposition. Better by far to say something nice or complimentary about them instead; that will earn you respect.

At the very least, do not comment. Restrict conversation to the industry in general and redirect it towards the benefits which you and your enterprise have to offer.

Your client will soon come to realise that your greatest selling point is that you are a person of integrity. One to be trusted and one whose discretion can be relied upon. He'll know you and like you for it.
