A Bit About Bosses

"A Bit About Bosses”   is the 3rd in my Tom's Vivid Views series of original copyright press releases sent from my happy home in the sunny south of Portugal

When you first strike out on your own and become your own boss you will, in all liklihood, already know a bit about bosses from previous work as an employee. And even though you are starting off with no employees under you, you still need to manage yourself. So what you've learned from your ex-bosses is going to come in handy either way.

From a self-employed perspective it really doesn't matter if your former bosses were good, bad or indifferent in your eyes. You had to live with them and should have learned from them all. You'll have found it more difficult to do a good job under a bad boss of course and yet such a boss should have taught you a lot. I see the bad boss experience kind of like an athlete training on sand dunes or on the beach, as I do. It's damned hard work but it toughens you up for the real event. When you transfer on to a dedicated running surface you can go like the wind. In life all pursuits should be like that - the hard work in the preparation, the performance itself pure fun.

One benefit of being under the control of a bad boss is that it can incentivise you to strike out on your own; the 'I must get out of here' syndrome. Working with a good boss can also encourage you to go it alone, but in a quite different way. He will have created a happy and productive working environment, thus demonstrating what is achievable.

You will never see eye to eye all the time with any boss, good or bad, but, whereas the bad boss will simply beat you down a good boss will most likely welcome your views and input. Your ideas may be at odds with his but disagreeing with a good boss is a quite different story from working under a bad one!

We all need to be able to take direction, even from ourselves(!), so listen, be flexible and take criticism on board. Such is life. As your own boss you are duty bound to work things out for yourself and take responsibility for all your thoughts and actions. Be open to what the boss says – whether that means yourself, your boss, your client or your partner in life!

With any boss you should start from the position of trusting that the boss knows what he's doing. So, in your self-employed role have total belief in yourself. It may not always be clear to others why you are doing things in a particular way, but that's because they cannot see the bigger picture. Outsiders can only see things from a limited or ignorant point of view. You as an entrepreneur (or any boss in any business) may be looking for something others have not thought of, you may be intent on actions that would never occur to anyone else.

Either way, all bosses want what is best for the bigger picture, as opposed to the limited view from one employee's or one outsider's perspective, because they see their affairs globally as if looking at a map from above. No, they're not always God (only sometimes) but they generally know best how to achieve things. So, as your own boss, shut out external interference and trust your instinct and judgement to know what's right. Then most often you will be!

It took me some years to establish myself in business but I believe that in life only the most resolute of tryers will prevail and after several years of a bank account in a permanent state of cardiac arrest my perseverance began to pay!

I became a successful Business Consultant, Investment Adviser and award-winning Salesperson and Marketing Professional and I coined the term 'Creative Solutions' to describe my work in devising and implementing innovative approaches to situations in business, commerce and industry (some call it trouble-shooting). From my successes I grew my own group of small companies.

Today I host my 'Wake Up Leisure and Learning Breaks', personal mentoring and business guidance, in the tranquility and calm of the sunny south of Portugal and I am the author of several best-selling books in the self-help, business and successful living genres.

CONTACT ME - I'll be thrilled to hear from you!

The life of which you dream is HERE within your grasp!
