Health-Fitness-U Patients Want Personal Treatment What patients with serious diseases really want when it comes to information about their health-fitness. When Wberad. was severely injured four years ago, he listened carefully to what his doctor told him about his condition and treatment options, then he turned to the Internet for more information. What he found was that most people think, that’s not going to happen to me, he says, “but I learn something new one day at a time, so where’s the reliable information for people like me?” Good question? Patients want only information that applies to their health-fitness situation, as Wberad’s statement shows. Websites and brochures produced for their type of illness were too general or had little information about their particular form of the disease. Patients are looking for the reliable information on their own, to choose healthcare treatment. While it may not be practical to provide detailed information about every form and stage of a disease, but an overview of a condition should at a minimum contain links to advocacy groups for more information. Getting diagnosed with a chronic illness makes most people feel anxious; making it difficult for patients to understand and remember everything they’re told. New patients remember less than half of what their doctors tell them. Having a one-page sheet that the patients doctors can prepare with links to reliable information for the newly diagnosed. This can be their road map back to health-fitness. When patients are ready to learn more, they can. Lifestyle choices should be carefully thought out and researched in order to live actively. As steps, that can help patients feel better moving forward. Moderated message boards, and forums where questions and comments need to be approved to be posted, should be considered. This could give patients a sense of community that would include the companies that make the medication they take. Disease information for family members is often lacking, and content for caregivers may simply repeat patient information. Gear more information specific to your family members and their caregivers. Dealing with a serious illness takes a huge amount of time and organizational skill on the part of patients. A patient may see several doctors, visit a clinic for treatment, consult a nutritionist, and get help from a therapist. This generates a great amount of paperwork, insurance forms, which the patient should retain. The information that is created for patients is often very clinical in nature, slightly edited from what they provide to healthcare providers. Patients are individuals, with jobs, families, hobbies, and unique likes and dislikes. In other words, they’re just like you and me, but they’re also living with the physical and emotional consequences of a serious illness. From the patient point of view, having attention brought to the kinds of information they want can make them feel like they’re being heard and supported.
